Orioles play to their fifth tie

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Trent Mummey doubled with two outs in the eighth inning to score Steve Tolleson, who singled and stole second base, and Dana Eveland escaped a jam in the ninth in the Orioles' 5-5 tie with the Phillies. Neither team scored in the 10th, and the Orioles head back to Sarasota with a 9-9-5 record. Five ties actually ties a spring training record, though the research only goes back to 1996. The 2006 Dodgers and 2010 White Sox also had five ties, according to STATS LLC. The Phillies put runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth, but Eveland retired the next three batters, striking out Tim Kennell to end the inning. Stu Pomeranz handled the 10th flawlessly. Mummey's RBI double came against Jose Contreras. Manny Machado singled in the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon. Manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Rick Adair praised left-hander Brian Matusz for keeping the Orioles in the game despite not bringing his best stuff to Clearwater. "I thought Brian was OK," Showalter said. "I thought he was pretty good. You can tell he was kind of getting stuck in his delivery a little bit. He wasn't quite as fluid as he has been and will be again. He made some big pitches when he had to. He gave us a chance to win. "He's been pretty good this spring. That's something he wasn't able to do last year, keep us in a ballgame when he wasn't carrying all his bullets. I kind of liked today as much as I liked the other ones, in a lot of ways." Said Adair: "You get to the point where you're getting on 15 to 20 innings and guys' arms are dragging a little bit. It's the 36th day of spring training. It was great to see him work through that." Jason Berken made his first spring appearance and retired three straight batters after a leadoff double. "He's been out of sight but not out of mind," Showalter said. "We know what a healthy Berken, operating like he's capable of, can do for us." Showalter thinks there's still time for Berken to make the club. Adair noted that Berken had good velocity and a good sinker. "And those were the first sliders he's thrown this spring," Adair said. "Outstanding." Matt Lindstrom and Kevin Gregg will each pitch two innings Monday in a minor league game at Twin Lakes Park. Luis Ayala will pitch Tuesday in a minor league game, following Wei-Yin Chen to the mound. Tsuyoshi Wada and Chris Tillman will face the Twins Tuesday in Sarasota. Eveland will start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays in Dunedin.
