Orioles put Galvis on IL, option Wilkerson and Wade

The Orioles placed shortstop Freddy Galvis on the 10-day injured list this morning with a right quadriceps strain.

They also optioned pitcher Konner Wade and infielder Stevie Wilkerson to Norfolk and recalled outfielder Ryan McKenna and infielders Domingo Leyba and Ramón Urías, who are in Buffalo for the series finale against the Blue Jays.

The Orioles selected Leyba off waivers from the Diamondback on June 4. He was 0-for-22 with two walks, leaving his career line at .149/.241/.234 in 54 plate appearances.

The first hint that Leyba was headed to Buffalo came when he was scratched last night from Norfolk's lineup.

Leyba is a career .289/.346/.436 hitter in eight minor league seasons. He was 17-for-61 (.279) with a double, five home runs and 20 RBIs in 15 games with Norfolk.

After going hitless in his first game with the Tides, Leyba homered in three straight, including a grand slam, and was 7-for-14 with 10 RBIs.

Most of Leyba's starts in the minors came at shortstop, where the Orioles needed a replacement. That gave him an edge over Jahmai Jones, who's viewed as a possible second baseman in the future and needs to develop more at the position.

Leyba is wearing No. 75.

Urías is 14-for-57 (.246) with two doubles and two home runs in 64 plate appearances with the Orioles. He's batting .258/.340/.483 with six doubles, a triple and four home runs in 101 plate appearances with Norfolk and provides middle infield depth.

Galvis limped off the field in the second inning yesterday after reaching on a bunt single and was transported on a cart to the auxiliary tent. .He was batting 249 with a .720 OPS, 12 doubles, a triple, nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 274 plate appearances.

The Orioles signed Galvis to a one-year deal in January for $1.5 million with a $250,000 bonus if he's traded.

More surprising is the addition of McKenna, who's gone 8-for-41 in 47 plate appearances with the Orioles as an injury replacement on multiple occasions. He made his major league debut on April 5 in New York.

This is the fifth time that McKenna has been recalled. He's batting .269/.367/.582 with three doubles and six home runs in 17 games with the Tides. He leaves behind a six-game hitting streak.

Anthony Santander is playing on sore left ankle that he sprained April 20 in Miami while going back to first base on a pickoff attempt.

Wade made his major league debut yesterday and allowed six runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Jorge López is 2-9 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.458 WHIP in 15 starts. He's struck out 71 batters in 71 1/3 innings.

López threw a season-high 6 1/3 innings in his last start against the Astros and held them to two runs. He's made five career appearances against Toronto and posted an 11.20 ERA and 1.976 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings.

Right-hander Ross Stripling has a 4.33 ERA and 1.227 WHIP in 12 games, including 11 starts. He's averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Stripling has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts and six of eight.

In two career appearances against the Orioles, Stripling has allowed three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Orioles haven't posted their lineup.
