SAN FRANCISCO - The Orioles were one out away from going 4-6 on the road trip, from falling 1 ½ games out of first place, their largest margin since June 1.
They were once down by six runs, rallied and appeared on a verge of a frustrating loss.
And then it happened.
Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer to left field off Santiago Casilla with two outs in the ninth and Zach Britton recorded his 37th save in a stunning 8-7 victory over the Giants at AT&T Park.
Britton stranded two runners, including Buster Posey after an intentional walk, to remain perfect in save chances. Denard Span bounced out with the count full to end it.
Brad Brach (7-1) got the win after retiring the side in order in the eighth.
Manny Machado singled with one out in the ninth and took second on left fielder Brandon Crawford's error. Chris Davis struck out looking for the fourth time, but Mark Trumbo walked and Schoop hit his 18th home run to stun the crowd and send the Orioles' dugout into a frenzy.
Matt Wieters followed with a triple for his career-high fifth hit. More people would be talking about it if not for Schoop.
A rotation that produced seven quality starts in a row couldn't get through six innings at AT&T Park. It created a giant problem in the last two games, until the late innings today.
A road trip that began with two wins in three games in Chicago took a nasty turn on the West Coast, until the late innings today.
The Orioles lost three of four to the last-place Athletics, but they won two of three over the first-place Giants.
Trumbo hit his 34th home run with one out in the eighth inning, a solo shot to left field off Hunter Strickland that reduced the Giants' lead to 7-4. He continues to lead the majors.
Schoop and Wieters singled to bring J.J. Hardy to the plate as the tying run with one out. Hardy poked an RBI single into right field off Derek Law, but pinch-hitter Steve Pearce flied to the left field warning track and Adam Jones popped up.
Pearce just missed a game-tying home run, and he knew it as he ran up the line.
Who knew that it wouldn't really matter? Not after Schoop delivered his 12th game-winning RBI of the season.
Left-hander Wade Miley was charged with six earned runs (seven total) in only 4 1/3 innings. Tyler Wilson let all three inherited runners score in the fifth, when the Giants sent 10 batters to the plate.
Dylan Bundy came within an out of a quality start Friday night, with manager Buck Showalter removing him after 92 pitches. Kevin Gausman was done after four innings last night, allowing only two runs and two hits, but also walking six batters and striking out nine.
Miley was burned in the second when Trumbo dropped Eduardo Nunez's wind-blown fly ball and Trevor Brown bounced an RBI single into left field. Brown was only in the lineup because of Posey's back tightness, and he later delivered a two-run single off Wilson.
Hunter Pence homered to lead off the fourth. Brandon Crawford doubled with one out, Joe Panik walked with two down and pitcher Johnny Cueto delivered an RBI single.
Can't walk Panik there. Can't surrender a hit to Cueto, who also singled off Wilson in the fifth, either.
Showalter removed Miley after Pagan led off the fifth with a looping double over Davis' head, Brandon Belt followed with an RBI single, Pence singled and Crawford drew a one-out walk. There were a handful of cheap hits off Miley - bouncers through the infield, Pagan's flare - but also enough mistakes to almost decide the outcome.
Jones, less than 24 hours after being hit on the hand by a Madison Bumgarner pitch, drove in the Orioles' first two runs with an RBI single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Wieters scored both runs.
Hyun Soo Kim collected three hits today, including a long RBI double in the seventh that scored Pedro Alvarez, who drew a walk after batting for Wilson.
The Orioles are 66-51 overall and 27-34 on the road. The flight home later just got a whole lot shorter.
