Orioles recall Povich and option Baker

The Orioles recalled left-hander Cade Povich, who was on their taxi squad, and he’s starting tonight against the Red Sox at Camden Yards. Manager Brandon  Hyde confirmed last night that Povich would get the ball.

Reliever Bryan Baker was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk as the corresponding move. That one was anticipated but not revealed until this afternoon.

Povich registered a 6.27 ERA and 1.688 WHIP in eight starts with the Orioles and is 6-1 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.107 WHIP in 15 games (14 starts) with Norfolk. He's averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings with the Tides.

MLB Pipeline ranks Povich as the organization’s No. 5 prospect.

Albert Suárez is expected to be pushed back to Sunday. Hyde said yesterday that the club wanted to provide some extra rest for the rotation and downplayed the possibility of a six-man setup.

Baker has a 4.71 ERA and 1.3 WHIP in 17 appearances. He allowed two runs and three hits in the sixth inning Tuesday night against the Nationals, worked the ninth last night and stranded a runner on second base.

The Orioles haven’t posted their lineup but Jackson Holliday likely remains at second base after last night’s four-hit game. His average has climbed to .200 with a .650 OPS.

Holliday hit a grand slam after returning to the Orioles on July 31 and is batting .294/.346/.588 (15-for-51) this month.

Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello has made 22 starts and gone 10-5 with a 4.97 ERA and 1.436 WHIP in 117 2/3 innings. He’s allowed three runs or fewer in his last six starts and seven of eight.

Bello has faced the Orioles twice. He allowed one earned run and three total in 5 1/3 innings at Fenway Park and three runs in five innings at Camden Yards. He’s made four career starts against the Orioles and surrendered 10 earned runs (12 total) in 20 2/3 innings.

Cedric Mullins is 4-for-8 against Bello. Eloy Jiménez is 3-for-3 with a double. Colton Cowser is 3-for-5 with two doubles.

The Orioles are one game out of first place in the American League East. The Yankees are losing to the Tigers 4-0 in the sixth inning.

Among the minor leaguers released by the Orioles recently is High-A Aberdeen corner infielder Max Costes, who played at the University of Maryland. He hit a combined .211/.314/.277 in 54 games between Aberdeen and Single-A Delmarva.
