The Orioles haven't confirmed a starter for Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia, but they made right-hander Yefry Ramirez a candidate earlier today.
Ramirez has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and infielder Steve Wilkerson went on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle.
The timing works for Ramirez and the Orioles, since he was scheduled to start Wednesday for Triple-A Norfolk.
Ramirez tossed five scoreless relief innings against the Mariners on July 28 and was optioned the next day, but he's eligible to return sooner than 10 days because he's replacing an injured player. Miguel Castro and Mike Wright Jr. also are possibilities, but Ramirez appears to be the favorite.
If given the assignment, Ramirez would be making his second major league start. He faced the Red Sox on June 13 and allowed three runs and four hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
The Orioles need a starter Wednesday with Dylan Bundy on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle. Bundy is slated to make Friday night's start in Minnesota.
Wilkerson came out of Sunday afternoon's game at Camden Yards with "symptoms" of an oblique injury, according to manager Buck Showalter. Wilkerson had his first career double and multi-hit game.
Wilkerson is 4-for-17 since the Orioles selected his contract.
With Jace Peterson on the roster and Tim Beckham off the disabled list, the Orioles can function with only one utility player. And subtracting a bench player isn't as problematic with no designated hitter in a National League ballpark.
