The Orioles recalled reliever Colin Selby this morning from Triple-A Norfolk as the replacement for Cade Povich, who was optioned following last night’s 5-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Selby was acquired from the Royals for cash considerations on July 11. He’s allowed six earned runs and seven total with 10 hits in nine innings.
Selby, 26, appeared in two games with the Royals this season and allowed two earned runs and three total in three innings. His last appearance was May 4 against the Rangers, which came after a scoreless inning the previous night. He posted a 9.00 ERA in 21 games (five starts) with the Pirates in 2023.
His last appearance with the Tides was Thursday. He didn't allow an earned run in four straight outings before surrendering three in two-thirds of an inning.
Povich’s latest stay in Baltimore was destined to be brief. He was charged with two earned runs last night in a career-high 6 1/3 innings and left to a standing ovation, but the Orioles recalled him only to make the one start and push back everyone else in the rotation.
Moving Povich to the bullpen wasn’t feasible because he threw 89 pitches and would have required days of rest. The Orioles already were short a reliever last night after optioning Bryan Baker.
The Orioles bumped Albert Suárez to today. They want the same hot hand.
Suárez hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts over 11 2/3 innings to lower his ERA from 3.89 to 3.39. He’s been a marvelous replacement for injured starter Grayson Rodriguez.
The entire body of work for Suárez against the Red Sox consists of one start, one relief appearance and a combined 6.75 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in 9 1/3 innings. We’re going back to his rookie season in 2016.
The start was only his second in the majors and it went much better, with Suárez allowing two earned runs (three total) in 6 1/3 innings.
Boston right-hander Kutter Crawford has registered a 4.21 ERA and 1.112 WHIP in 24 starts. His 27 home runs are tied for the major league lead.
Crawford had back-to-back starts of seven scoreless innings July 7-13. Over the next five starts, he’s allowed 26 runs and 29 hits in 24 innings.
Crawford faced the Orioles on April 10 in Boston and shut them out on two hits over five innings. The rematch was May 29 at Camden Yards and he allowed five runs in six innings. He’s 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA in five career games (four starts) against them.
Anthony Santander is 4-for-11 with a home run against Crawford.
