Orioles recall Tanner Scott (plus Britton and Trumbo updates)

The Orioles added a second left-hander to their bullpen this afternoon by recalling Tanner Scott from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning infielder Engelb Vielma to the Tides.

Manager Buck Showalter complimented Vielma for his work ethic, good hands and intelligence.

"His ball security has gotten real good," Showalter said. "He kind of knows what we're looking for. I think he's excited because he can bring defensively the things you look for. It was tough sending him out because he's a really good defender."

Scott has appeared in one game with the Orioles this season and allowed one run and two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He's thrown six scoreless innings at Norfolk with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Zach Britton threw 20 fastballs off a half-mound earlier today and said he felt great. The bigger test on his surgically repaired right Achilles tendon comes Saturday with pitchers fielding practice.

Britton is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on May 28 and Showalter said it could happen "shortly thereafter." However, he won't start a rehab assignment on May 1 while the club begins a two-city West Coast trip.

Mark Trumbo took early batting practice and participated in some running drills. He said his right quadriceps muscle feels much better.

Trumbo's return to a rehab assignment is "imminent," Showalter said, and could happen as early as Monday.

Showalter said it's Trumbo's call and added that there's "one little area where we're not quite there."

Colby Rasmus finally is making some progress from his hip injury.

Gabriel Ynoa's right shoulder is better after he received a cortisone injection.
