Orioles to honor Earl Weaver on April 20 (updated)

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Orioles announced this morning that they will host a public celebration of life for Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver on Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m. at Camden Yards. The program, "A Celebration of Earl," will include a video tribute and a collection of notable guest speakers, including manager Buck Showalter, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Rick Dempsey, Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson and Earl's son, Mike Weaver. Gates A and H will open at 1 p.m. Complimentary parking will be available in Lot B/C, and admission is free. The ballpark will close once the event has concluded and reopen at 5 p.m. for the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Weaver passed away on Jan. 19 at 82. The Orioles will wear a patch on their right uniform sleeve throughout the season in honor of Weaver. Team Spain is expected to start left-hander Richard Salazar on Wednesday against the Orioles. Salazar spent the 2012 season with the Sioux City Explorers of the independent American Association. How did the Orioles miss signing this guy? Update: Upon further review, the Orioles chose Salazar in the 13th round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft and he pitched in their system through 2007. I should have asked how they missed re-signing this guy. Former Orioles farmhands Paco and Danny Figueroa also are part of Spain's roster. Jason Hammel starts Thursday against the Blue Jays, who will bring left-hander Mark Buehrle, Sergio Santos, Justin Germano, Claudio Vargas, Alex Hinshaw, Evan Crawford and Mickey Storey to Sarasota. On Friday night, the Orioles will start Wei-Yin Chen against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton. Kyle McPherson starts for the Pirates. Fun fact, courtesy of Orioles PR: Ishikawa could become just the third player in team history with a last name beginning with the letter I, joining - drum roll, please - Cesar Izturis and Pete Incaviglia. Adam Jones is batting eighth today for Team USA against the Chicago White Sox. Only Shane Victorino is below him in the lineup.
