Orioles announce Cabrera signing, Hassan designated for assignment

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles announced today that they've signed infielder Everth Cabrera to a one-year contract. He's going to work out at the Ed Smith Stadium complex this afternoon and be made available to the media when he's done.

Cabrera will wear No. 1. To make room for Cabrera on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated outfielder Alex Hassan for assignment.

In 481 career games, Cabrera has batted .248/.319/.333 with 12 home runs, 128 RBIs and 136 stolen bases. He led the NL with 44 steals in 2012.

Cabrera had career-highs in batting average (.283), hits (108) and home runs (four) in 2013 and tied his career-high with 31 RBIs before having his season cut short due to a 50-game suspension. He finished ninth in the majors and fifth in the NL with 37 steals, and his .283 average ranked third among shortstops.

Cabrera is guaranteed $2.4 million this season and can earn $600,000 in incentives.

The Orioles selected Hassan off waivers from the Athletics on Nov. 20.
