Orioles place Scott and Mateo on injured lists

The Orioles recalled reliever Marcos Diplán from Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon and selected the contract of infielder Pat Valaika. In corresponding moves, the club placed reliever Tanner Scott on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain and put infielder Jorge Mateo on the 60-day injured list with right lumbar inflammation.

The move with Mateo frees up a spot for Valaika on the 40-man roster.

Mateo batted .280/.328/.421 in 32 games after the Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Padres. He had seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and eight RBIs in 116 plate appearances.

Scott has a 5.17 ERA and 1.574 WHIP in 62 appearances. He's averaging 6.2 walks and 11.7 strikeouts in nine innings.

In Scott's last outing in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, he retired only one Blue Jays batter and was charged with six run and six hits. He allowed two runs and three hits in his previous appearance in one inning.

Valaika was designated for assignment on Aug. 5 when the Orioles claimed Mateo. He cleared waivers, reported to Norfolk and slashed .225/.244/.313 in 22 games.

Valaika batted .192/.251/.280 with five doubles, four homers and 21 RBIs in 71 games with the Orioles.

Diplán was optioned after Game 1 Saturday, with the Orioles recalling Spenser Watkins. He has a 5.49 ERA 1.220 WHIP in 16 appearances as a rookie.

Rookie Alexander Wells is making his fifth start and eighth appearance. He's registered a 7.15 ERA and 1.897 WHIP in 22 2/3 innings, and is averaging 4.4 walks per nine innings.

Wells started against the Yankees on Aug. 3 in the Bronx and allowed six runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Gerrit Cole is 14-7 with a 2.78 ERA and 0.989 WHIP in 26 starts. He's averaging 1.9 walks and 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Cole's second start of the season came against the Orioles and he shut them out on four hits over seven innings, with no walks and 13 strikeouts.

Trey Mancini is the Orioles' nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.

The award recognizes the player who "best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

Nominees will be honored beginning on Wednesday, which Major League Baseball is recognizing as "Roberto Clemente Day."

The winner will be selected by a panel that includes commissioner Rob Manfred, representatives from MLB-affiliated networks, including MLB Network FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS, MLB.com, and Clemente's children, Enrique, Luis and Roberto Jr.

Beginning on Wednesday and continuing through Oct. 3, fans are allowed to vote for the overall winner at mlb.com/clemente21. The winner of the fan vote will count as one vote among those cast by the panel.

MLB will make a $7,500 donation to The Food Project, a Baltimore organization that brings cooking, farming, restaurant skills, job opportunities, sustainable food sources, mentorship and hope to the youth of Southwest Baltimore.

Mancini underwent surgery in 2020 to remove a malignant tumor from his colon, followed by six months of chemotherapy treatments. He's subsequently become heavily involved with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (CCA), joining their "Never Too Young" advisory board. The Orioles sold #F16HT t-shirts, which raised more than $80,000 to support the CCA Patient and Family Support Services.

The first baseman also started The Trey Mancini Foundation that works "to support those who are facing illness, empower those suffering from emotional trauma, and provide assistance to those experiencing hardship."

The foundation has partnered with a Frederick, Md., branch of Blessings in a Backpack, a national organization that feeds elementary-aged children on weekends who face food insecurity. In July, The Trey Mancini Foundation, Blessings in a Backpack and the Orioles raised more than $2,800 during an essential items drive and collected over 1,000 pounds of food for children in need in the Baltimore area.

In addition, Mancini hosted a charity tailgate that raised nearly $20,000 to support young Orioles superfan Mo Gaba, who endured four different battles with cancer before passing away last year.
