Orioles recalling Drake

MIAMI - The Orioles are making another roster move today to bolster their bullpen, recalling right-hander Oliver Drake from Triple-A Norfolk. Drake will be in Miami for tonight's game against the Marlins.

Right-hander Tyler Wilson, who earned his first major league win last night, most likely is the corresponding move. Wilson has pitched twice in the past three games and he has options, unlike most of the relievers.

Oliver Drake.pngAs I wrote this morning, Drake has posted a 0.96 ERA in 16 games with the Tides, with two runs, 10 hits, four walks and 30 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. He's been on manager Buck Showalter's radar.

Drake is throwing about 75 percent splitters, and his stuff is downright nasty, according to people in the organization who have seen him.

Left-handers are batting .125 against Drake and right-handers are hitting .160.

The Orioles selected Drake, 28, in the 43rd round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the Naval Academy. He's been on and off the 40-man roster.

Drake went back on it in November, and he's headed to the majors for the first time. He could be the fifth Oriole to debut this season, along with Wilson, pitchers Jason Garcia and Mike Wright and infielder Rey Navarro.

Drake is 32-29 with a 3.45 ERA in 176 minor league games, including 73 starts. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder in 2012, and the Orioles moved him to the bullpen.

ESPN.com first reported that Drake was being recalled today.

Note: The Orioles have reached an agreement with Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda on a minor league contract pending a physical, according to a club official.

Miranda, 25, is 22-25 with a 3.78 ERA in seven seasons in Cuba's Serie Nacional, most recently going 5-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 11 starts with Mayabeque in 2013 and 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts with Isla de la Juventud. He had a combined 28 walks and 80 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings.

CBSSports.com first reported the agreement.
