Orioles release Todd Redmond

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Orioles have released veteran right-hander Todd Redmond from his Triple-A contract, according to a tweet from the Norfolk Tides.

Redmond's next turn in the rotation on Wednesday is now listed as TBA.

Right-hander Terry Doyle has moved up from Double-A Bowie and is starting tonight against Gwinnett.

Redmond, 30, allowed 15 runs and 18 hits in two starts covering only five innings with the Tides. He surrendered six runs and 12 hits in 9 2/3 innings in spring training before the Orioles reassigned him to minor league camp.

The Tides rotation also includes Ariel Miranda, Odrisamer Despaigne and Nick Additon. Another starter could be headed to Norfolk after the Orioles activate Kevin Gausman from the disabled list and insert him into their rotation.

Gausman started last night at Single-A Frederick, allowing two runs (one earned), striking out eight batters and throwing 74 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. The Orioles could give him one more rehab start or activate him next week.

The Orioles rotation ranks 22nd in the majors with a 5.04 ERA and 23rd with 50 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .274, which ranks 25th.

The bullpen's 1.42 ERA is second behind the White Sox (1.11) and its 38 innings rank fourth. Relievers have held opponents to a .199 average, sixth in the majors, and their 42 strikeouts are second behind the Royals (43).

It's no surprise that the Orioles and Rockies are tied for first in home runs with 20. The Orioles bashed five more last night, including four in the seventh inning in their 11-5 win over the Rangers.

The Orioles rank second with a .294 average, two points behind the Rockies, second with a .540 slugging percentage and fourth with a .357 on-base percentage. Their .897 OPS is second behind the Rockies (.908).

The Orioles also rank third in extra-base hits with 43 and 10th in walks with 33.
