The Orioles managed to make another trade at the 4 p.m. deadline and again didn't touch a player on their active roster.
After dealing Triple-A reliever Shawn Armstrong to the Rays this morning for cash considerations, the Orioles sent injured shortstop Freddy Galvis to the Phillies for 23-year-old Single-A pitcher Tyler Burch.
Galvis hasn't played since straining his quadriceps muscle June 26 in Buffalo, the last image of him as an Oriole being carted off the field. He batted .249/.306/.414 with 12 doubles, a triple, nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 72 games.
Ramón UrÃas has impressed as the fill-in and should remain the regular shortstop.
The Orioles signed Galvis to a one-year deal in late January for $1.5 million with a $250,00 bonus if traded. The injury appeared to ruin his chip status, but the Phillies are taking him back and willing to wait until he's healthy.
Galvis, who's working out in Sarasota, Fla. and ramping up baseball activities, spent his first six seasons in Philadelphia. He's going to hit the free-agent market again and it's conceivable that the Orioles could re-sign him if again choosing to bring in a veteran on a one-year deal with the hope of flipping him at the deadline.
No other deals were struck today, with left-handers Paul Fry and Tanner Scott remaining in the bullpen for tonight's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park. They were the hottest tickets on the club but didn't budge.
Burch has posted a combined 3.99 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in 23 relief appearances between Jersey Shore and Clearwater. He's walked eight batters and struck out 49 in 29 1/3 innings.
Burch has a 2.63 ERA and 1.031 WHIP in 35 games (four starts) over two minor league seasons. He attended Lewis-Clarke State College in Idaho.
Also, the Major League Baseball transactions page notes that the Orioles optioned left-hander Ryan Hartman to Triple-A Norfolk after they claimed him off waivers from the Astros.
