During a homestand where the Orioles offense has been quite productive, tonight that offense produced a five-run inning for a come-from-behind win.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth and 3-2 in the sixth, the Orioles put up a five-run inning to beat the Yankees 7-5 and take the series, two wins to one. The Orioles bounced back from Monday's tough loss to take the final two games of this series.
The Orioles are 5-4 on the year and 9-3 against New York at Camden Yards since the start of last season.
Jonathan Schoop greeted reliever David Carpenter with a solo homer to start the big sixth inning. His third longball of the year tied the game at 3-3. Last April, he hit two homers over 76 at-bats. Tonight, No. 3 came in his 23rd at-bat. It was his fifth homer in 18 career games against the Yankees.
Later in the inning, Delmon Young's pinch-hit RBI single made it 4-3 and Chris Davis doubled in two runs for a 6-3 lead. Caleb Joseph's third single of the game scored Davis for a 7-3 lead.
Earlier, Davis' RBI single in the first scored Everth Cabrera for a 1-0 O's lead. New York took a 2-1 lead in the third on Carlos Beltran's two-out, two-run double to right-center.
In the fourth, Alex Rodriguez blasted a long homer to left on Bud Norris' 2-0 pitch for a 3-1 lead. It was Rodriguez's 656th career homer and his 1,923rd all-time run scored to move into a tie with Derek Jeter for ninth place all-time.
Manny Machado's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth pulled the O's to within 3-2. Machado's first of the year came on a 1-0 pitch off New York starter Nathan Eovaldi.
This was the third time during the six-game homestand that the O's scored seven or more runs. They plated 35 runs in the six contests. They hit two homers tonight and hit 11 during the homestand.
Norris pitched five innings tonight, allowing five hits and three runs with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches and has an ERA of 12.38 through two starts. He gave up seven hits in 14 at-bats in his first start against Toronto and tonight allowed five in 20 at-bats to New York.
The Yankees scored twice off Tommy Hunter in the eighth to pull within 7-5. The O's bullpen has been scored upon in every game this year. The longest streak last year was six consecutive games.
Zach Britton pitched the ninth to record his second save in two days and third in three chances on the season. He got Chase Headley to ground out to end the game with two men on base.
Now the Orioles take Thursday off before beginning a two-city, seven-game road trip Friday night at Boston.
