Paredes on his callup and minor league notes on Sisco and Burgess

Jimmy Paredes was an Oriole for two days in February. He returned to the organization in July and today made it to the major league roster. The 25-year-old switch-hitter, who can play infield and outfield, was called up today from Triple-A Norfolk to take the roster spot of Kevin Gausman, who was officially optioned to the Gulf Coast League after last night's game. Paredes has been with four different organizations since last November: * November 4, 2013: Selected off waivers by the Miami Marlins from the Houston Astros. * February 15, 2014: Selected off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles from the Miami Marlins. * February 17, 2014: Selected off waivers by the Kansas City Royals from the Baltimore Orioles. * July 24, 2014: Purchased by the Baltimore Orioles from the Kansas City Royals. The Orioles tried to get him off the 40-man roster but keep him in the organization in February when the Royals claimed him. Paredes played in nine games for Kansas City in April and May, going 2-for-10 at the plate. He hit .305 in 65 games for Omaha, Kansas City's Triple-A club. When the Orioles got him back in July he went to Triple-A Norfolk. He played mostly at third base and in 32 games with the Tides batted .258 with seven doubles, a triple, three homers and 23 RBIs. After all that he finally gets to Baltimore. Manger Buck Showalter said Paredes was likely going to be a Sept. 1 callup anyway. Now he's here earlier than that and the Orioles have a five-man bench at the moment. "Was a little bit surprising. Feels exciting," Paredes said of his callup. "Yeah, they had taken me in spring and then in July they took me again. That must mean they like me and that's a good thing for me." Paredes said he feels his best position is third base. He can add some speed to an O's team lacking in that aspect of the game. This year at Triple-A between two teams, he stole 21-of-22 bases. "Hopefully I can bring a lot of things including speed. Hope to play hard and bring my best game here," he said. In the O's minors, Single-A Demarva catcher Chance Sisco was named to the South Atlantic League postseason All-Star team. The 19-year-old Sisco is batting .335 with 25 doubles, a triple, four homers, 62 RBIs and an OPS of .830. He hit .404 in June and has batted .353 in 62 games since the All-Star break. With just a few games remaining Sisco ranks second in the league in batting but is just two points behind the league leader. Showalter, who often talks about the O's minors during his pregame press conferences, talked about Sisco. "I've been staying up with it," Showalter said. "He is like two points behind the batting title in the South Atlantic League. The guy that is ahead of him is with Lakewood and is 22. For a 19-year-old to be competing for the league batting title in the South Atlantic League is pretty cool. Last night it lessened the sting of the loss to check out he picked up a point on him yesterday." Outfielder Michael Burgess has been named to the Carolina League's postseason All-Star team. Burgess was promoted to Double-A Bowie Aug. 2 and is currently on the Baysox disabled list. One of the Carolina League's top hitters in 2014, Burgess, 25, hit .315 over 83 games with Frederick, and still qualifies as the league leader in batting average. At the time of his promotion, Burgess placed first in RBIs, doubles, extra-base hits (51), total bases (186) and intentional walks (four). He was also tied for second in home runs as well as third in batting average and hits (101). By the way, Showalter mentioned Burgess too and he knew that Burgess is leading the Carolina League in hitting even though he hasn't played in that league in over a month. Showalter also informed reporters that minor league catcher Alex Murphy will have surgery on his left shoulder next Tuesday. Murphy was the Orioles' sixth-round pick in June out of Calvert Hall in Baltimore. Murphy hit .271 with three homers and 26 RBIs in 58 games this summer, mostly at short-season, Single-A Aberdeen.
