The Orioles today outrighted catcher Ronny Paulino to Triple-A to make roster room for the addition of catcher Taylor Teagarden.
Paulino could refuse the assignment and become a free agent.
"I have a couple of days to decide what I'm going to do," he said this afternoon in the O's clubhouse. "It's tough because you want to be here in the big leagues. But I'm not playing much here so, if you have to go down somewhere and play to get more at-bats, you definitely have to think about that.
"I don't know yet (if I will go to the minors). I have to talk to my agent first and we're going to decide in the next few days what we are going to do."
Paulino batted .254/.266/.302 in 20 games with the Orioles. He said he is not sure if there will be other teams interested in acquiring him.
"I don't know. We need to see what options we'll have. In my situation, you always have to be prepared for what is coming. Have to take the opportunities I have. When I went down there the first time that helped me a lot," Paulino said of his trip to Norfolk in May.
Meanwhile pitcher Dana Eveland was designated for assignment today as Miguel Socolovich was added to the O's roster.
If he clears waivers by Monday, Eveland indicated he would accept a move back to Triple-A Norfolk. Eveland went 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA (32.1IP, 17ER) in 14 games (two starts) with Baltimore.
"I'm not exactly sure how it works out, but my contract is only gauranteed if I accept an assignment in this situation. I'm not going to walk away from my contract. But I'd love to be picked up by another club and stay in the big leagues.
"I don't know what is going to happen. Going to go home for a few days and wait for a phone call I guess," Eveland said.
Was Eveland surprised the Orioles made this move?
"Not necessarily. Socolovich has been throwing the heck out of the ball and the team is scuffling so they have to make some moves. Unfortunately I was the odd man out. I don't feel like I threw the ball that poorly.
"Last night was not my best effort but other than that I feel like I've done a decent job. Not really filling in the role I expected to. Didn't use me for as much length as I thought I would be out of the bullpen, you know. I don't know. Who knows what is going to happen now," he said.
