Last night, they were playing Game 5 in an International League playoff series at Columbus, but tonight pitchers Tyler Wilson and Oliver Drake, first baseman Christian Walker and outfielder Junior Lake are all with the Orioles.
They were called up to the team after Triple-A Norfolk's loss to Columbus on Monday night, which ended the Tides' season.
"It feels great to be back," Wilson said. "This is obviously where every minor leaguer wants to finish out their season is up here helping out the major league club. Hope we get a good winning streak going and finish the season strong."
Wilson is not only glad to get called up, but glad to be healthy. He was scratched from a start at Norfolk on Aug. 9 with a strained left oblique and didn't pitch in a game again until going three innings Sept. 6 with the Tides.
On Sept. 10, he got the win in Game 2 of the playoff series with Columbus, giving up just one run over five innings and 67 pitches. Manager Buck Showalter said today that he is leaning toward Wilson getting at least one more start for the Orioles.
"It (the call-up) was definitely something I was hopeful for," Wilson said. "But given the circumstances with my oblique the last six weeks, priority No. 1 was just to get healthy with that and return to pitching. We had a really good run with Norfolk making the playoffs and we had a great season there. I was happy to make a couple of rehab starts in there and feel strong and feel healthy."
Wilson went 5-5 with a 3.24 ERA in 17 starts with Norfolk. He made his major league debut May 20 with the Orioles. In six games, including two starts, he is 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA. So he has been effective for the Orioles in a small sample size, both out of the bullpen and in a starting role.
"Pitching out of the bullpen was something I had not experienced before at the professional level. So, the trial by fire was definitely beneficial," Wilson said. "Also having starts under my belt and seeing how we prepare for a lineup and approach a game plan are all invaluable things for my future and whatever my role may be with this team.
"I think any success is always beneficial. It is something to build off of and it kind of affirms your process and your trust in your abilities. These guys here make that a lot easier, too, with how supportive they are and positive they are with their encouragement."
In two big league starts, Wilson is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA. In his most recent start on Aug. 3 at Oakland, he gave up two runs over 7 2/3 innings and got his second major league win.
"I am thankful for any call-up and the opportunity and experience. This whole year has been full of learning and really aided in my development a lot," he said.
