Not again: In suffering his second blown save of the year in the O's 7-6 loss to Toronto Friday afternoon, Mike Gonzalez gave up 2 ER in just 2/3 of an inning. He threw 18 pitches, just nine for strikes, after throwing strikes on just 12 of 26 pitches on Thursday vs. Tampa.
He has allowed 4 ER in two innings on the year with two blown saves. Last year he was five for six in save chances before suffering his second blown save on May 12 for Atlanta.
The Orioles are now 37-20 all-time in home openers and 13-6 at Camden Yards. The O's had won eight of their last nine home openers until this loss.
Big crowd: The attendance of 48,891 was a sellout and largest Opening Day crowd ever at Camden Yards, topping the 48,607 that watched the opener last year vs. New York.
The O's drew four walks in the first inning today and walked seven times in the game. They had drawn a total of eight walks in the series vs. Tampa.
The Birds have allowed at least one run in the 8th inning or later in each of their four games to date. They have allowed six 8th or 9th inning runs.
Miggi's day: Miguel Tejada went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and 4 RBI. It was his first game of four or more RBI since July 28, 2009 when he drove in five for Houston vs. the Cubs. This year, Tejada is 4 for 10 with a homer and 5 RBI with men on base and 0 for 6 when batting with the bases empty.
Tejada's career high is 8 RBI on 6-30-01 for Oakland vs. Texas.
O's starter Brad Bergesen gave up three runs in the first and 5 ER in 4 2/3 on the day. It's just the second time in his career he has not completed five innings, the other coming April 26 last year vs. Texas.
With the win, Toronto ended a five-game losing streak in Baltimore. This was just Toronto's 3rd win in its last dozen games at Camden Yards.
Vernon Wells went 1 for 4, but did not homer. He was trying to become the first player in the Majors to homer in the season's first four games since Mark McGwire in 1998 with St. Louis.
In game two of this series, Saturday at 7:05 p.m. its David Hernandez vs. Dana Eveland.
