Post-game notes: O's blanked by the Jays

Blanked: Last year, the Orioles were shutout ten times. Tonight, they were blanked for the first time in 2010 on six hits by Toronto, 3-0. They went just 6 for 30 at bat, with five singles and one double to drop the team batting average on the year from .237 to .231. The O's went hitless, 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and are batting just .174 (8 for 46) with RISP on the season. Tonight, they got just one runner past first base after the fourth inning. Last year, the O's batted .284 with RISP, finishing second in the AL. The O's had scored 11 runs in their last two games. On the season, they have plated just 17 runs. Different year: Last year, Toronto went just 1-8 in Baltimore but now the Jays are 2-0 at the Yard. The Blue Jays are 23-15 vs. the Orioles since the start of the 2008 season. David Hernandez pitched well, but took the loss in his first start of the year. He allowed six hits and two runs over six innings. The Orioles have lost his last 10 starts dating to last August 11th. This was his first-ever appearance vs. Toronto. Hernandez's six-inning outing was the second longest by an O's starter on the year and the second O's quality start of 2010. One turn through the rotation and the O's starters' ERA is 4.67. After walking just three batters in 15 spring innings, Hernandez walked four batters tonight. He threw 98 pitches, 54 for strikes. The attendance was 21,148. Game time temperature was 52 degrees and time of game was 2:24. Nothing vs. that guy: In 14 1/3 innings over two career starts vs. the Orioles, Dana Eveland has pitched shutout ball on eight hits. When he was with Oakland, he blanked the O's on three hits over seven innings in May of 2008 before tonight's 7 1/3 inning-outing. He threw 94 pitches tonight with two walks and strikeouts. Eveland struggled in 2009, going 2-4, 7.16 with the A's. The Orioles began the year playing four straight one-run decisions until tonight. The only previous year the O's started with four games decided each by one run was in 1971. A hitting streak: Garrett Atkins had one hit tonight, a ninth-inning single. He is 7 for 20 on the season and has hit safely in every game. He is 5 for 12 the past three games. Adam Jones went 0 for 4 tonight and is 0-13 the last three games after going 4 for 9 in games one and two. Matt Wieters is 1 for 6 in this series after picking up six hits in the Tampa series. Nick Markakis went 0 for 2 with two walks tonight. After not drawing a walk in 63 spring at bats, Markakis has now walked eight times in the first five games. Miguel Tejada is 4 for 9 with a homer and 4 RBI in this series. In Sunday's series finale at 1:35, Kevin Millwood (0-0, 3.60) faces Shaun Marcum (0-0, 3.80). Millwood went 1-1, 2.45 last year vs. Toronto and is 2-4, 5.33 in nine career starts against the Jays.
