Potomac clinches second-half division crown, begins playoffs Sept. 4

The high Single-A Potomac Nationals dropped Winston-Salem 8-7 in 11 innings Wednesday, completing a game delayed from July. The P-Nats' win clinched the second-half division crown. It is the first time the P-Nats have clinched both the first- and second-half crowns in the Carolina League's Northern Division since 2008.
The 2008 team - with future major leaguers Jordan Zimmermann, Craig Stammen, Ross Detwiler, Jhonatan Solano and Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr - went on to win the Carolina League championship.
This year's team has combined solid starting pitching with clutch hitting and stingy defense to post 11 shutouts, tied with Winston-Salem for most in the Carolina League this season. Their 82 wins at the start of the originally scheduled game are in the top five in the minors this season.
The P-Nats will face the Lynchburg Hillcats, beginning September 4 at Pfitzner Stadium in Game 1 of a three-game series. All three games, if necessary, will be played at home in Woodbridge, Va.
