Pregame notes in Tampa (updated)

TAMPA - Orioles pitcher Mike Wright has been shut down with tendinitis in his right elbow. Wright, one of the Orioles' top pitching prospects, didn't reveal the discomfort until reporting to the minor league complex at Twin Lakes Park. Wright wasn't sharp this spring, allowing one run and three hits in three innings, with three walks and two strikeouts, before being optioned. Center fielder Adam Jones is the proud father of a baby boy. Manager Buck Showalter exchanged text messages with Jones, who likely will return to the lineup on Sunday. Suk-min Yoon is en route to Tampa and will make his Orioles debut on Saturday. Yoon obtained his work visa in Ottawa, but his flight yesterday was canceled due to the weather. Brian Matusz flew to Philadelphia today to have the wart removed from his left middle finger. He will return to camp tonight and take his next scheduled turn. Showalter wouldn't confirm that Zach Britton is now viewed as strictly a reliever, though he noted that the left-hander's current pitching schedule gives that appearance. Britton worked only one inning yesterday, throwing all seven pitches for strikes. Showalter said 16 scouts from other organizations filed into Ed Smith Stadium yesterday, slightly more than usual and a clear sign that they expect the Orioles to make some pitchers available in trades. Update: The Orioles won't make any cuts today. At least one is coming on Friday. In Monday's split-squad games, Matusz and Kevin Gausman will pitch in the 1:05 p.m. game against the Phillies in Clearwater, and Ubaldo Jimenez will start the 7:05 p.m. game against the Twins in Sarasota. The Orioles are off Tuesday. Bud Norris will start Wednesday against the Rays in Sarasota, Wei-Yin Chen will start next Thursday night against the Pirates in Bradenton, and Chris Tillman will start March 21 against the Braves in Sarasota. Alex Gonzalez and Henry Urrutia had back-to-back singles in the first inning today, but Urrutia committed a baserunning gaffe to end the inning. Urrutia rounded second on Steve Pearce's long fly ball to left field and failed to touch the bag again on his way back to first. Earlier today, Showalter was asked how Gausman looked this spring compared to a year ago. "I kind of thought he'd be on of those guys who doesn't put on weight. He's put on 12-15 pounds and you can tell it's good weight. A little broader through the back and the legs," Showalter said. "I think he knows what he's getting into. He's a little more comfortable coming into camp. He's not the guy carrying around the bubble gum bag and the pink tutu and whatever else they do to him. He's kind of graduated. With a guy like Kevin, you're pretty confident it's going to be when, not if." Gausman has minor league options, which could complicate his chances of going north with the club. "It's always that challenge every spring," Showalter said. "Your best 25 or your right 25? Right now, I'm dealing with the best 25 until somebody tells me differently. We'd like to think at some point he's going to be one of those. It's just whether or not now is the time." Showalter indicated that he'd use Britton in back-to-back games later this spring. Is Britton a reliever? "We're still going to look to get him multiple innings so that if something happens between now and the end of spring that he's an option for us as a starter, also," Showalter said. "So, we're still viewing him as a starter at this point. It does take on the appearance of (reliever) right now. "I think everyone is going to have to start showing their hand here shortly. I'm not talking about us necessarily, but I'm talking about other clubs. You get a feel for where you are and where you hope to be, but you're not. "I think we had 16 scouts here yesterday. Everybody knows we have a lot of good pitchers who are out of options, and they're all looking at us. In the past, I don't remember that many being at our games. They're not there to look at (Manny) Machado."
