Pregame notes on Harvey, Jones and Hardy

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Hunter Harvey is scheduled to pitch two innings Thursday afternoon at extended spring training in Sarasota.

Harvey had been shut down for a second time with discomfort in his groin. The injury first surfaced on March 29 during Harvey's third inning of work in a minor league game at Twin Lakes Park.

Harvey has pitched in simulated games after being cleared to throw again.

The Orioles will assign Harvey to Single-A Frederick after he's deemed ready to join the rotation.

Adam Jones stayed in the lineup tonight after raising concerns during his at-bat last night in the top of the ninth inning. Jones grimaced and took a long stroll around the batter's box after taking a mighty cut and missing.

Showalter said executive vice president Dan Duquette called head athletic trainer Richie Bancells to check on Jones.

"He either heard or saw it," Showalter said. "I see the same thing you all do and I know Richie's going to check with him. Adam has some type of expression after every swing. But I saw the same thing you all did.

"He actually said his shoulder bit a little bit more than that."

Jones has moved up to second in the order, switching places with Manny Machado.

"With their bullpen, starter, some things I want to present tonight," Showalter said. "A little different thing. Nothing real deep other than kind of looking at the matchups and some things they should and shouldn't be able to do out of their bullpen. It gives us a better chance if we can stay close."

Shortstop J.J. Hardy knows that he's the backup second baseman if Jonathan Schoop sustains an injury. Ryan Flaherty was optioned yesterday to Triple-A Norfolk. Hardy's responsibilities were expanded.

"Yeah, Buck talked to me about it in an emergency. I've been over there when we've done shifts and stuff," Hardy said.

"It would definitely be different. Obviously, it's a shorter throw to first base. Turning double plays is a totally different side of the bag. But I've turned a few when we are in the shift. Let's just hope, keep our fingers crossed, there's no emergency.

It wouldn't be a totally new experience for Hardy. He played the position once in a Little League game while filling in for his brother.

Hardy was showing off his knuckleball in front of the dugout before batting practice.

"He's taking Chris Davis' place," Showalter said. "He's the guy. Filthy. I would not go out there and try to catch three."
