ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A few of the Orioles are working on their bunting today as part of their early batting practice session at Tropicana Field.
The group includes Jonathan Schoop, David Lough and Ryan Flaherty.
Small ball may be in order if the Orioles are going to offer more run support for their pitchers.
The Orioles have allowed only 14 runs in the last seven games, with 13 of those scoring in the last four days. Their 1.86 ERA over 63 innings since last Monday ranks second in the majors behind the Cardinals (1.84).
The rotation produced a quality start in nine of the 10 games on the just-completed homestand, pitching to a 2.45 ERA over 62 1/3 innings. Take away the Ubaldo Jimenez start when he allowed six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, and the ERA drops to 1.65 ERA.
The starters have surrendered two earned runs or fewer in 13 of the last 17 games, registering a 1.51 ERA over 83 1/3 innings in those 13 games.
The Orioles have allowed just one home run in the last 69 innings - Juan Francisco's two-run shot in the second inning Friday night.
First baseman Chris Davis ranks ninth among active players in OPS (minimum 150 plate appearances) versus the Rays at .924.
The Orioles have turned 83 double plays to lead the majors, 10 more than any other team. The Rockies and Giants are tied for second with 73.
The Orioles also lead the majors in pinch hit average, batting .375 mark (9-for-24) with two doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored.
The Orioles hosted the "Father's Day Catch on the Field" promotion for the second consecutive year yesterday and raised more than $33,000 for the Orioles Charitable Foundation.
Pitcher Ramon Ramirez has been transferred to Triple-A Norfolk from the Gulf Coast League.

Single-A Frederick's Michael Burgess was named The Carolina League "Player of the Week" for June 9-15 after batting .500 (11-for-22) with two doubles, a triple, three home runs, nine RBIs and four runs scored.
