Rally time again: O's come from three down to beat Yankees

Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman had a tough day with his command, and one throw he made that did find its intended target was a balk, and that was costly as well.

But despite those struggles, and a 4-1 deficit in the fifth, the Orioles won again. They rallied to beat the New York Yankees 5-4 in front of 38,916 at Camden Yards.

Just like yesterday, Brad Brach pitched the eighth and Zach Britton the ninth. Britton recorded his third save on the year. It is his 52nd straight save since Oct. 1, 2015. That is the fourth-best streak since saves became a stat in 1969. It is also his 123rd save as an Oriole, and he moves into sole possession of second on the club's all-time list. The O's bullpen has thrown 16 2/3 scoreless innings this season.

The Orioles are 4-0 to start the year, and are the only unbeaten team left in the majors. They are 15-7 at home against New York since the start of the 2014 season.

Hyun-Soo-Kim-orange-swing-sidebar.jpgWith the O's down 4-3 in the seventh, Chris Davis doubled off Tommy Layne with one out, and then scored on Mark Trumbo's RBI single off Dellin Betances. Trumbo stole second - yep you read that right - and he then scored on Hyun Soo Kim's third hit of the day, an RBI single for the 5-4 lead.

Gausman allowed eight hits and four runs over 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and fanned four, threw 97 pitches, 56 for strikes, and has an 5.40 ERA through two starts.

With New York leading 2-1 in the fifth and runners on first and third, Gausman threw toward third base. Manny Machado was well off the bag, and that apparently was why a balk was called, scoring Austin Romine and sending Jacoby Ellsbury to second. Moments later that extra 90 feet proved big for Ellsbury, who scored on a Starlin Castro single, and New York led 4-1.

Earlier, a two-run single by the Yankees No. 9 hitter, Ronald Torreyes, gave New York the 2-0 lead in the second. Chase Headley walked with one out and went to third on an Aaron Hicks double. Torreyes singled both home as Hicks' slide just beat the tag of O's catcher Welington Castillo, who threw Torreyes out trying to stretch it.

The O's closed within 2-1 but left the bases loaded in the last of the fourth. Machado drew a leadoff walk from Masahiro Tanaka. After left fielder Brett Gardner robbed Chris Davis of a hit, Machado stole second as Trumbo struck out. Castillo's looper into center scored Machado for his first Orioles' RBI. An infield single and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, but J.J. Hardy's dribbler near the plate was turned into a third out.

After falling behind 4-1, the Orioles rallied within 4-3, scoring twice in the fifth, but left the bases loaded again. The inning featured Machado's RBI double and an RBI fielder's choice by Trumbo. But with the bases loaded and one out, Kim struck out on a questionable called third strike, and Jonathan Schoop popped out. The O's had left eight on the bases by the end of the fifth.

Tanaka, who gave up seven runs over 2 2/3 in the opener against Tampa Bay, went five innings today. He allowed six hits and three runs and has an ERA of 11.74 through two starts.

The series finale is here on Sunday afternoon, when left-hander Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37 ERA in 2016) comes off the disabled list to pitch opposite New York lefty CC Sabathia (1-0, 0.00 ERA in 2017).
