Rally time: O's come from 7-1 down, beat SF on Schoop's HR in ninth

They were down by six runs at one point. In the ninth inning, they were down 7-5 and down to their last out.

But the Orioles completed an amazing comeback when second baseman Jonathan Schoop blasted a three-run homer in the ninth, leading the Orioles past San Francisco 8-7 at AT&T Park.

The Orioles were behind 7-1 after five innings, but scored the game's final seven runs. This was their 34th come from behind win of the season.

In the ninth, facing San Francisco closer Santiago Casilla, Manny Machado singled with one out and advanced to second on an error. After Chris Davis struck out, Mark Trumbo walked. Then, Schoop blasted an 0-1 pitch out to left for his 18^th homer. The three-run shot turned a potential 7-5 loss into an 8-7 lead. It was Casilla's sixth blown save.

Zach Britton pitched the last of the ninth, stranding two runners to improve to 37-for-37 in save chances on the year. Brad Brach pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win.

With a win that allowed them to complete a 5-5 road trip, the Orioles (66-51) stay a half-game back of first-place Toronto. The Orioles scored two in the seventh and two more in the eighth to set the stage for Schoop's ninth-inning heroics.

Earlier, Giants backup catcher Trevor Brown, pressed into service when Buster Posey didn't start due to a tight back, drove in the Giants' first run with a single in the second and added a two-run single in a four-run fifth that gave San Francisco a 7-1 lead. It looked like the Giants would head on to a win.

O's starter Wade Miley was replaced by right-hander Tyler Wilson with the bases loaded in the fifth, and Wilson let in all three inherited runners. Miley went 4 1/3 allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned) on 83 pitches. In 15 1/3 innings in his three O's starts, he has given up 12 runs and 22 hits.

Through Friday, O's starting pitchers had worked to an ERA of 2.77 on this road trip with seven quality starts. But Kevin Gausman and Miley allowed nine runs and 10 hits in 8 1/3 frames the past two days.

Adam Jones singled in a run in the O's fifth as they cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-1. Down 7-1, the O's scored twice in the seventh. Matt Wieters led off with a double and scored on Jones' sac fly. Hyun Soo Kim's double plated their third run.

In the eighth, the Orioles got closer still as they pulled within two runs, but left two on base to end the frame. Mark Trumbo's solo homer made it 7-4 and was his 34th. Trumbo has three homers and eight RBIs his last four games. J.J. Hardy's RBI single made it 7-5, but Derek Law got Steve Pearce to fly out and Jones to pop out to end that rally. After going 3-for-22 his last seven games, Wieters went 5-for-5 today and is 6-for-6 the past two games.

The Orioles began today with a record of 1-48 when trailing after eight innings. They are now 2-48.

Now, the Orioles head home for an eight-game homestand that starts Tuesday with a two-game series against Boston. Yovani Gallardo (4-4, 5.17 ERA) pitches against former Oriole Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.43 ERA).
