Ramos hits homer on special day to help drop the Giants 3-1

Warning: Buffalo Crossing

Nationals Park felt like Yellowstone Park on Sunday with Wilson Ramos - nicknamed "The Buffalo" - leading the Nationals past the Giants 3-1.

Ramos belted a solo shot and RBI single, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win.

Ramos said the homer was good for the Nationals, but also special for him on a personal level.

Next time, I hit more harder and run a little bit more harder. It made me feel good for this day I hit well. Especially this day, because my daughter have 11 months today. I did today for her. It made me really happy today."

Manager Matt Williams was impressed with Ramos' work Sunday, especially the RBI single in the eighth inning off of Giants reliever Hunter Strickland.

"That's vintage Wilson tonight," Williams said. "Man on third, line drive back through the middle. He's got the ability to do that. That's why he hits in the middle of the order, because he's an RBI guy. He's a run producer. He stayed on a first-pitch slider and delivered."

Williams said he is happy that Ramos has been able to stay healthy so far this season. Last year, Ramos went down with a broken hand on opening day. This season, he has stayed in the lineup, spelled occasionally by Jose Lobaton. But Ramos has played 64 games so far this season. He was held to just 88 games last year and 78 in 2013.

"It helps to have him available for us behind the plate," Williams said. "I think he's worked well with our starting pitchers and he provides offense. Tonight, it was a homer, but for me the most impressive one was the RBI single. That will allow him to be productive for us. To be that four, five, six guy for us that has opportunity. Legs are good, and he's been working, catching a lot, but he feels good."

In the big picture, Ramos was also proud the team was able to sweep the Giants, who ruined last year's promising season with the National League Division Series win over the Nationals.

The Nationals have now won 18 of the last 24 regular season games against San Francisco.

"We come into this series and try to beat those guys because of last year in the postseason," Ramos said. "Now we are playing really good against them. We have to keep playing like that. There's a long season left and (we) have a lot of work to do."
