Reds win homer-filled contest, 10-5, at Camden Yards

It was not a home run derby contest tonight at Camden Yards although it looked like it at times. On a night when left-hander Brian Matusz struggled again, Cincinnati beat the Orioles 10-5 in a game that featured nine homers. All but one run scored in the game came via a homer as Cincinnati hit five and the Orioles hit a season-high four in front of 38,976 at Camden Yards. Matusz gave up three homers among nine hits and six runs in just 4 2/3 innings as he falls to 1-3 with an ERA of 6.85 in five starts since coming off the disabled list. In his first two starts, on June 1 and June 6, he gave up just three earned runs over 11 innings. But over his last three starts, he has allowed 14 earned runs, 20 hits and six homers in 11 1/3. He has allowed seven homers over his past 13 1/3 innings. The Red went up 4-1 in the third only to see the Orioles tie the game at 4-4 on a Nick Markakis two-run homer in the last of the third and a Matt Wieters solo shot in the fourth. But Joey Votto's second homer of the night, a two-run shot, put the Reds ahead for good, 6-4 in the fifth. Votto went 3-4 with a pair of homers and five RBIs. Drew Stubbs hit a solo homer to center in the Reds' eighth that traveled 442 feet. Adam Jones hit a solo shot for the Orioles, his 13th, to tie Mark Reynolds for the team lead. J.J. Hardy went 2-for-4 and hit a solo shot, his 10th, in the seventh. Hardy now has six consecutive two-hit games, going 12-for-27 in that stretch. The 10 runs allowed is the most by the Orioles since a 17-5 loss to Washington on May 20. The Orioles fall to 34-40 and have lost nine of their past 13 games. They are 5-6 versus the National League and 21-19 at home. The Reds improved to 40-38 overall and 3-8 against the American League. In the series finale, Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Jeremy Guthrie (2-9, 3.79) pitches against the Reds Homer Bailey (3-1, 3.00).
