Reimold will undergo surgery (updated)

Though the club hasn't made an announcement, outfielder Nolan Reimold has decided to undergo surgery to alleviate the pressure on a nerve caused by a herniated disk in his cervical spine. Manager Buck Showalter spoke with Reimold for about an hour yesterday. The club is letting Reimold determine how he wants to address the topic with the media. "We're leaving it in his hands," Showalter said. Showalter didn't confirm that surgery is imminent, but that's the plan. He also wouldn't concede that Reimold is done for the season. It depends on what the surgeon finds during the procedure. "He feels pretty good about the direction he's headed, knowing exactly what he's doing to do now," Showalter said. Also, Nick Markakis could swing a bat for the first time on Monday. There was talk of having him hit off a tee today, but he'll take the weekend off. Markakis could start with some dry swings before progressing to tee work and batting practice. The Orioles still consider him ahead of schedule in his recovery from surgery exactly three weeks ago to remove a broken piece of hamate bone from his right wrist. Markakis expects to return before the All-Star break. "We're close," Markakis said. "We just don't want to rush it." Matt Lindstrom will throw two innings tonight in Bowie and one inning on Sunday. He could be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday. Lindstrom will be on a 30-pitch count tonight. Catcher Ronny Paulino has a hairline fracture in his left big toe after fouling a ball off it Sunday in Atlanta, but he'll play through it. Outfielder Endy Chavez flew to Sarasota yesterday because he's not making sufficient progress in his recovery from a strained hamstring. Reliever Dana Eveland will be going on paternity leave in the next few days. His wife is due to give birth on Tuesday. The Orioles can replace Eveland on the roster for a maximum of three days. They would have to clear room on the 40-man for a non-roster player. The Orioles can't DFA a player who's on the disabled list. Examples include second baseman Ryan Adams and pitcher Oliver Drake. Catcher Taylor Teagarden is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment July 2 in the Gulf Coast League. Reliever Stu Pomeranz, on the disabled list with a torn oblique muscle, is doing some light tossing in Sarasota and could start his rehab assignment in the middle of July. Jamie Moyer would have to give permission to make another start at Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles haven't confirmed their plans for him, but Moyer isn't listed among the Tides' starters over the next five days. Showalter said he has two different scenarios for his rotation for the Angels series that begins Tuesday. He's alerted the opponent, but he's not telling the media. Update: Reimold met with reporters and just confirmed he's scheduled to have surgery Monday at Johns Hopkins to remove the disk pressing on a nerve. He compared the procedure to what cost quarterback Peyton Manning all of last season with the Indianapolis Colts.
