Rick Peterson talks about Boston interview and possible future with O's

Orioles director of pitching development Rick Peterson remains with the organization after interviewing for the Boston Red Sox pitching coach job, a position that went to Juan Nieves. Peterson continues to say how much he loved working with the club this year, but at the same time, does admit that he would likely have interest if any other big league pitching coach positions come open. "I love the Orioles," he said tonight during a phone interview. "I love the energy, the people, everything about it. I love doing what I'm doing with the Orioles. Unless there is something from a big league level that is a great opportunity, I would absolutely come back to the Orioles. It would have to be a special situation for me to go somewhere else even in the big leagues." Peterson said he has not talked with any other clubs about any coaching openings. If another club did want to interview him, it would first have to seek permission from the Orioles, as Boston did. Peterson, who has been a big league pitching coach for the A's, Mets and Brewers, said even if he had been offered the Boston job, it was not a slam dunk that he would have taken it. "At that point, I would have gone back to Dan Duquette and said 'Dan, tell me where we stand here,' and talk to Buck (Showalter) and Dan," Peterson said. "What is the future possibility here and can we continue to lay this foundation. I certainly would be open to continuing, without question. "This organization right now, if we can continue to go where we're going ... the only way to win in the big leagues, you have to develop your own pitching. You have to develop your own as a core foundation." Peterson's contract runs through the end of the calender year and he does not yet have a new deal in place for the 2013 season. "I haven't spoken with Dan or Buck," he said. "I think there is so much going on right now and our contracts run through the end of December. I spoke with Dan prior to going to instructional league and I spoke with him prior to interviewing with the Red Sox. We have left on the table that we had talked about next year. I hope to talk to Dan when the time is right about our future possibilities." Peterson did say he felt good about his interview with the Red Sox. "It potentially could have been a really intriguing and great opportunity to work with John Farrell, who I coached," Peterson said. "John and I had a great meeting, the interview went well and the feedback was tremendous. But those situations have to be a customized fit and apparently Juan Nieves was a perfect fit for that situation and I'm very happy for Juan to get this opportunity as a big league pitching coach. "For me, personally, I've had a great situation here. This has been tremendous and we've had tremendous accomplishments with our pitching this year. We have the support from the ownership with the Angelos family and Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter. To be with forward thinking people that put a program in that is this detailed and they supported all the minor league pitching coaches, it's been wonderful and we made tremendous progress this year. "The only thing that could take me away from this would be an opportunity to get back to the big leagues, but other than that, you can't ask for better than this. There is an incredible energy here."
