Rotation adjustment and injury updates

By throwing only 30 pitches last night before rain washed away his start, Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy will come back on short rest Sunday in the series finale against the Rays at Camden Yards.

Rookie Yefry Ramírez will be pushed back to Tuesday night against the Yankees in the Bronx.

Bundy surrendered three home runs to the Red Sox last night in only 1 2/3 innings, but the stats no longer count.

"With an off-day (Monday), we don't want Dylan sitting around that long," said manager Buck Showalter. "We're trying to manage Yefry's innings and starts that could potentially kind of get in the way of him finishing the season if he stays with us. Hopefully, he will."

Ramírez has made five starts with the Orioles and 14 with Triple-A Norfolk, leaving him five short of his career high set last summer. He's also made one relief appearance in the majors.

The Orioles are keeping close tabs on his innings and they've climbed to a combined 100 1/3. He's topped out at 124 1/3 in each of the past two seasons.

"I'd like for his innings to jump some, but just don't want to get too far ahead of it, which would put him potentially in the bullpen for Saturday if we need him," Showalter said. "If not, we'll let him have a second work day."

Given the struggles that surfaced again last night, Bundy is eager to get back on the mound.

"He liked the idea when I brought it up to him last night," Showalter said. "I think it's good for us, too, all the things we're trying to solve a little bit. He's had a long period off since the All-Star break. I'd like to get him back out there and not sit on that for a while. I expect him to pitch good on Sunday."

Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez hit back-to-back home runs last night in the first inning and Mookie Betts delivered a three-run shot in the second before another storm pummeled the area and led to a delay of 2 hours, 33 minutes and a postponement.

"I try not to oversimplify and everybody's, 'Can you come up with something new?' It's fastball command," Showalter said. "You go back through a tough outing, you see where the target is and where the ball ends up. And then where it ends up. He'll be the first to tell you."

Bundy had allowed 15 earned runs (16 total) and five home runs in 12 1/3 innings in the three starts that count since coming off the disabled list.

"He feels fine physically," Showalter said. "He'll make a couple of quality located pitches and hitters don't do much off him. We've seen him really good. He caught a little break last night getting to throw that one out and start over, but who knows? He may have pitched five shutout innings after that."

Bundy is 2-4 with a 6.03 ERA and 1.660 WHIP in eight career games against the Yankees and has allowed eight runs and 12 hits in 10 innings in his two starts on the road. Having him skip the series isn't the worst idea, though it also isn't driving the decision.

Outfielder Austin Hays will begin an injury rehab assignment Friday at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He's been sidelined with an ankle injury.

Outfielder Craig Gentry will play Monday at Single-A Delmarva now that his fractured rib has healed.

Infielder Steve Wilkerson, on the disabled list with an oblique injury, will play Monday in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Wednesday at Single-A Frederick.

Outfielder Anthony Santander was placed on Double-A Bowie's disabled list earlier this week with a staph infection in his knee.

Santander is batting .258/.293/.402 with nine doubles, three triples, five home runs and 22 RBIs in 54 games with the Baysox since the Orioles optioned him.

"Some good," Showalter said. "He's never really played at that level consistently. Did some last year on rehab. I was hoping for a little better, but he's still a young player. He's kind of finding his way. But he's a prospect. I think next year is when you really have a feel for what you've got."
