Santander and Ellis placed on injured list (and other notes)

The Orioles placed outfielder Anthony Santander and pitcher Chris Ellis on the 10-day injured list this afternoon, bringing their seasons to a premature end.

Bruce Zimmermann was activated from the 60-day injured list to make tonight's start against the Red Sox at Camden Yards. Infielder/outfielder Tyler Nevin was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.

Pitcher Keegan Akin was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room for Zimmermann on the 40-man roster.

A sprained right knee sent Santander to the IL. Last year's Most Valuable Orioles was slowed since April 20 by a sprained left ankle and recently was getting treatment for a sore left hamstring. He batted .241/.286/.433 in 110 games with 24 doubles, 18 home runs 50 RBIs.

Each of Santander's last 13 home runs came at Camden Yards, with his most recent road homer hit on June 29 in Houston.

Ellis, shelved with right shoulder inflammation, will be considered for next year's rotation after allowing seven runs and 18 hits in 25 1/3 innings in six starts after the Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Rays.

Nevin, the son of Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin, can play the corner infield and outfield spots. He went 1-for-5 with a double in two games in late May before returning to Norfolk, where he batted .227/.305/.392 with 18 doubles, 16 home runs and 52 RBIs in 111 games.

The Orioles haven't yet posted tonight's lineup.

Pedro Severino snapped a 17-game homerless streak on Sunday.

Ryan McKenna became the first Orioles leadoff hitter to reach base three times without a hit since Tim Beckham on July 28, 2018.

Zimmermann is making his first start with the Orioles since June 13. He's faced the Red Sox in three career games and allowed seven runs and 13 hits in 16 innings, with three walks and 14 strikeouts. J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers hit home runs.

Manager Brandon Hyde said Zimmermann would be limited to "four-ish" innings tonight, depending on pitch count.

The Orioles are 25-53 at Camden Yards and need one win to surpass their lowest home wins total in franchise history, set in 2019.

Chris Sale faced the Orioles on Sept. 17 after coming off the COVID-19 injured list and allowed one run and two hits in five innings. Austin Hays hit a solo home run.

Sale is 10-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 1.040 WHIP in 22 career games against the Orioles. Tonight is his 17th start.

The Orioles are 4-12 against the Red Sox, including 1-6 at home. They've gone 1-12 since sweeping Boston in the season's first series.

Boston holds the second wild card spot in the American League.
