Santander shut down six weeks (and other injury updates)

Orioles Rule 5 outfielder Anthony Santander underwent an MRI arthrogram on his right elbow today and has been diagnosed with a mild strain of his ulner collateral ligament. He's going to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection and will be shut down from throwing for six weeks.

Santander would retain his Rule 5 status next spring if he isn't active for at least 90 days.

Welington Castillo threw on the field today for the first time since going on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. He's eligible to return on Thursday and seems confident that he can do it.

"I was talking to him in the replay room last night during the game between innings. He's really looking forward to today," said manager Buck Showalter. "I'm hoping that's going to be good. I don't know yet, but I'll find out when I go out.

"He's reminded me a couple times that he doesn't think he needs any rehab. He's ready to go. I'd be a little surprised today if he didn't feel good. We've been pretty cautious with that thing. He is going to want to push. He's champing to get back."

Closer Zach Britton is flying down to Sarasota to begin rehabbing his strained left forearm. He underwent an MRI yesterday in Los Angeles that didn't reveal any damage to his elbow.

Pitcher Gabriel Ynoa said his strained right hamstring is improving. He went on the disabled list after tossing six scoreless innings Friday night against the White Sox.

"Today was my first day of receiving treatment," he said through interpreter Ramon Alarcon. "I went on the field and started throwing a little bit today, so it's been much better today."

Ynoa is confident that he'll be fully healed when his 10 days expire.

"Yes, absolutely. That's what I'm hoping," he said. "That's what I've been told. Everything indicates that after 10 days I'll be ready."

If there's a bright side to a DL trip, Ynoa missed only one start due to the injury.

"Just miss one start and then continue to show what I can do," he said, "because that's what I want, to show what I can do if given the opportunity."
