Selik's dominance earns promotion to Potomac

The Washington Nationals have announced that right-handed starter Cameron Selik has been promoted to Single-A Potomac after an almost perfect month of April on the mound for the Single-A Hagerstown Suns. Selik is 3-0 with a 0.31 ERA in five starts. He allowed his first run of the season in his last start Saturday at the Rome Braves, which snapped an astounding 37.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak that dated back to 2010. Selik's 0.31 ERA is not only the best earned run average in the minor leagues, but also of any major league pitcher with a minimum of 23.0 innings pitched. The 23-year-old carries a 10-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 30 strikeouts and just three walks in those five outings this season. The 6-foot-2, 235 lb., University of Kansas product was the Nationals' 22nd-round selection in the 2010 draft. During his run, highlights included an 11-strikeout performance on April 18 in five innings (15 outs) against Lakewood. He allowed just one hit in that game. "He has terrific location," Hagerstown Suns play-by-play announcer Bryan Holland said. "Cameron is not afraid to throw inside or out to both righties and lefties. He has a devastating slider that slips low and away. "Cameron also has a great differential in speed between his fastball, slider and changeup. This makes him virtually unhittable when the batter has two strikes on him." Selik showcased his strength and durability on April 25 when he went eight full innings against West Virginia, scattering six hits, walking none and striking out three for the win. The Potomac Nationals have also activated outfielder Eury Perez. Outfielder J.R. Higley and pitcher Ryan Demmin have been sent to extended spring training in Florida.
