Showalter "feels good" about Reimold being ready opening day (and notes)

SARASOTA, Fla. - It's been a light news day at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. Nobody is complaining. Nolan Reimold is making another start in left field, and manager Buck Showalter remains optimistic that he will be on the 25-man roster on opening day. Reimold had been shut down with soreness in his right shoulder and later was restricted to serving as the designated hitter. "I feel good about it," Showalter said. "There's no givens. We'll see. I'm glad that he felt good taking infield again today and he's going to play again tonight. So far, so good. "I don't have anything that makes me believe that he won't be ready." Showalter also said he isn't concerned about reliever Pedro Strop experiencing an emotional letdown after playing in the World Baseball Classic. "Pete's got his own button on all the time," Showalter said. "You never have to worry about him being ready to pitch and compete. "We're really proud of him. He pitched well." The Orioles will host a special pregame ceremony tonight and present a check to The Miracle League of Manasota. The third annual "Birdland Golf Classic," hosted by OriolesREACH on Feb. 20, raised over $40,000 for The Miracle League, which gives children and adults with special needs the opportunity to play baseball. Closer Jim Johnson, who lives in Sarasota, will represent the Orioles and OriolesREACH. Since its inception, the Birdland Golf Classic has raised more than $96,000 for the Miracle League of Manasota. For the 14,000 school-aged children with disabilities and their adult counterparts in Sarasota and Manatee counties, a synthetically surfaced baseball field with all the requisite amenities was built last year in Longwood Park, just off University Parkway in Sarasota. Sarasota County committed $500,000 to the capital improvement of Longwood Park, while the Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates contributed $150,000 for the field. Notes: Steve Johnson will start Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte. Other available pitchers listed in the game notes include Jair Jurrjens, Daniel Schlereth, Adam Russell and Daniel McCutchen. Jeff Niemann is starting for the Rays. Wei-Yin Chen starts Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Sarasota. Aaron Cook will start for the Phillies. The Orioles are listing their Sunday and Monday starters as TBA. They're already in midseason form. Mark Hendrickson and his wife, Cortney, are the proud parents of a baby girl, Sophia Joy, who was born Wednesday morning. Sophia is their third daughter. She's the first one to throw sidearmed. An elderly woman who works at Ed Smith Stadium was struck in the head by a ball during batting practice and taken to a local hospital. She had joined the ushers and other employees for a meeting beyond the left-field fence.
