Showalter on Camden Yards homecoming: "It doesn't surprise me with our fans"
They came ready to cheer. They came wearing orange. They came waving orange towels and they came to welcome their Orioles home a day after they defeated the Detroit Tigers in a three-game sweep of the American League Division Series.
Several hundred fans lined the walkway to home plate plaza at Camden Yards today as the Orioles arrived home from Detroit.
Orioles vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette high-fived fans after getting off the team bus and several players did as well.
The fans chanted "Let's go O's" and "We won't stop," and at one point booed a fan that showed up in a Yankees hat. He may have been lost. Or bored with no games left to watch.
"This is humbling, but it doesn't surprise me with our fans," manager Buck Showalter said. "We share in their happiness, and more importantly, in the opportunity we have."
Showalter was asked what it's been like since the game ended yesterday.
"You know what, just trying to respond to everybody wishing us well and congratulating us," he said. "They've been there through thick and thin, people you hear from. That means a lot to us and you know how much it means to them."
Showalter then took some time to just stand back and watch his players walk in through the cheering crowd. He wanted to soak in another moment.
Catcher Nick Hundley talked about the welcome home.
"Amazing. You don't get that too often. We've got a long way to go still. Hopefully it gets more and more exciting as we go on," he said.
Hundley feels the team should take a little time to enjoy the Detroit series win before they begin preparations for the AL Championship Series.
"We had a quick celebration," he said. "You know, we have a lot of work still to come, but at the same time, you beat a team like the Tigers, with that talented roster, you have to enjoy that for a little while for sure."
The Orioles' schedule for the week ahead is not yet announced, but Game 1 of the ALCS with Kansas City at Baltimore is set for Friday.
