Showalter on decision to bring up Guilmet

Reliever Preston Guilmet reported to Camden Yards this afternoon and is wearing No. 63. Guilmet takes the roster and bullpen spots of left-hander T.J. McFarland, who was optioned following yesterday's game. Because he's been pitching one and two innings, Guilmet doesn't fit the description of a prototypical long reliever. "Length in the American League is two innings and he's capable of that," said manager Buck Showalter. "He's rested and pitching well. Other than one hiccup, he's been solid. "The good news is we had some options there. (Josh) Stinson has been throwing the ball well. The roster is not an issue if we need to get somebody who's not on there." Before this season, Guilmet owned a lifetime 2.57 ERA and 90 saves in 196 games (15 starts) over five minor league seasons in the Indians system. He struck out 9.8 batters and walked 1.9 per nine innings. Last year, Guilmet posted a 1.68 ERA over 64 1/3 innings, recorded 20 saves and struck out 10.1 batters per nine innings in 49 games with Triple-A Columbus. This year, he has four walks and 17 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk. "There aren't going to be many of these 24 pitchers who are going to be here tonight who have a better minor league resume than he does," Showalter said. "He's carried it over there. He's only had one transition to the big leagues, one opportunity. We were fortunate to trade for him. Get a pitcher like that with that background and options are hard to find. "Obviously, Mac was down for a couple days and we're able to present ourselves better the next couple of days because of the job Mac did. One thing with long relievers is they just can't implode, and that's what Mac didn't do yesterday. That's why he's valuable up here." McFarland will re-enter Norfolk's rotation while he's down there. The Orioles also considered recalling Steve Johnson today, but he started on Thursday and required a little more rest. Johnson was on the disabled list last month with right shoulder tendinitis. "Real close, real close," Showalter said. "He had 89 pitches with limited rest. He was right on the cusp. Just didn't think he was rested well enough, especially coming off what he had. It's not fair to his arm to jump-start that, but he was an option, too." Kevin Gausman started Saturday for Norfolk after coming off the disabled list and is close to presenting himself as an option, but the Orioles aren't going to rush him after his bout with pneumonia. "That was some pretty serious stuff," Showalter said. "It's behind him. I was reading the medicals before I came down here and he felt good today after pitching Saturday. And yesterday. Yeah, now that he's back healthy again ... We look at all of our starters as options. Obviously, he's pitching well."
