Showalter on Machado's loud outs, plus a game update

CHICAGO - In the game here last night, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had a loud 1-for-5 night. He singled in the sixth, but could have had three other hits in the Orioles' 10-6 win.

That is noteworthy since Machado is trying to get his bat going. He is 4-for-13 in this series, returning Monday from missing four games with a strained left wrist and sore hand after getting spiked in the series at home against Pittsburgh.

Manager Buck Showalter noted this morning how Machado struck several balls well last night. He hit liners at 111 mph and 101 mph that were caught for outs.

Last year, Machado had a slash line of .294/.343/.533. This year it is .218/.292/.423.

"I got to tell you, Manny swung the bat pretty good since he's come back and it's really, not disheartening, but disappointing that he's hitting the balls hard and they're catching them," Showalter said. "The baseball gods haven't been kind to him. It really challenges your constitution a little bit when you are squaring balls up and they're catching them.

"The thing you have to stay away from is trying to hit balls where they can't catch them over the fence. He's had a really good approach the last two or three days and the challenge is to stay with it. He has hit in some really tough luck here. That was a three- or four-hit game last night that didn't work out."

No runs yet in Chi-Town: Chris Tillman pitched scoreless ball over the first three innings today, but it wasn't easy as the Orioles and White Sox were scoreless in the fourth.

Chicago loaded the bases in the second, but Tillman fanned Willy Garcia with a 92 mph fastball to end that threat. An inning later, Chicago put two on with two outs. But Tillman struck out Todd Frazier with a 91 mph fastball. His pitch count is at 68 after throwing 14 in the first, 30 in the second and 24 in the third. Tillman had allowed first-inning runs in four consecutive starts until today.

Now some runs: The game was tied at 1-1 through the top of the fifth. Matt Davidson hit yet another homer in the fourth to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. He hit No. 14 off a Tillman fastball. It was his fourth straight game with a homer, as he has connected in each game of this series. He is the first White Sox player to homer in four straight games since Alex Rios in April of 2013.

The O's tied it 1-1 in the fifth. Jonathan Schoop walked and Welington Castillo singled. A Caleb Joseph double made it 1-1 But the O's stranded runners at second and third with one out as Joey Rickard struck out and Adam Jones lined out.

Orioles down: In the top of the sixth, the Orioles missed another opportunity to take the lead. With one out, Mark Trumbo drew a walk and Trey Mancini singled to left. But Schoop flied out and Castillo grounded into a force at second to end the threat.

The White Sox then got to Tillman in the bottom of the frame. Davidson doubled leading off and Yolmer Sánchez worked a walk. Kevan Smith then laid down a bunt single to third base to load the bases on what looked like a blown bunt coverage by the Machado and Tillman. After a three-pitch strikeout of Garcia, Tillman gave up a two-run single to Melky Cabrera for a 3-1 White Sox lead, and that was it for the Orioles right-hander.

Right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis came in and issued back-to-back walks to Tim Anderson and José Abreu to give Chicago a 4-1 lead. And then a Leury García sac fly increased the lead to 5-1. After Frazier walked, Yacabonis was relieved by Miguel Castro, who struck out Davidson to finally end the inning.
