Showalter on O'Day's milestone strikeout (O's lead 3-0)

TORONTO - Since he returned Friday from the disabled list, Orioles reliever Darren O'Day has pitched two scoreless innings. He threw one on Friday against Tampa Bay and one more on Sunday.

He needed just 20 pitches, 15 strikes to get those six outs. It is nice to have him back in the late innings for the Orioles.

An Oriole since the 2012 season, O'Day reached some nice round career numbers on Sunday. He is now 35-15 with an ERA of 2.47 in 10 big league seasons. And he has now pitched exactly 500 innings with exactly 500 strikeouts.

"Of course, that it is, for a reliever," O's manager Buck Showalter said this afternoon. "One (because of) the longevity and taking care of yourself and having people that take care of you too. It's really hard to find. Pretty good for a waiver claim. Darren, he's been solid, a guy you can always count on.

"Getting him back and getting Zach (Britton) back (would be big). It is not so much we're going to pitch them every night. But if Mike (Givens) needs a day (off), now Darren can pitch. You can move things around. But if we don't get consistently deeper into games by our starters, it won't matter as much."

O's get early lead: The Orioles took a 2-0 lead here in the first inning tonight with a two-out rally. With no one on, Jonathan Schoop singled to left and Adam Jones worked an eight-pitch walk.

Mark Trumbo then crushed a two-run double off the top of the center field wall, not missing a homer by much. Trumbo blasted a pitch from Joe Biagini 419 feet and with an exit velocity of 111 mph. He now has 37 RBIs.

In the O's third, Schoop doubled to left with two outs and scored on Jones' single to left. That made it 3-0. Schoop is 2-for-2 and now batting .300.

Gausman is through five scoreless: For the first time tonight, Toronto pushed a runner into scoring position in the last of the fifth. But Kevin Gausman pitched out of it and has blanked Toronto on three hits through five frames on 87 pitches.

Givens with an escape act: Gausman was replaced by Mychal Givens with two on and one out in the last of the sixth. Givens issued a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third, but somehow pitched out of the mess. He got Kendrys Morales to chase a high fastball and strikeout with the bases loaded. Catcher Welington Castillo deserved a big assist, blocking several pitches and keeping a runner from third from scoring a couple of times in that inning.
