Showalter on Reimold: "We think he's got a chance to help us"

The Orioles will wait until after batting practice today to announce their roster move.

Nolan Reimold is playing left field tonight, but the club must create room for him on the active roster. They have an opening on the 40-man roster.

I'm still predicting that the Orioles option a reliever to Triple-A Norfolk and go with a six-man bullpen - a risky decision with the Red Sox and Yankees in Baltimore during the homestand.

Reimold is in the Orioles' lineup for the first time since July 13, 2013 against the Blue Jays.

"We've been looking for a way to get him here and he's just a good fit for the time being, and we hope he finishes the year with us. We think he's got a chance to help us," Showalter said.

"You know the whole story with Nolan and the challenges and everything. We like Nolan, but we don't like him that much. We think he can help us win. And I don't know what else you could do to get back here physically. Talking to everybody down there, we've got two or three guys. But right-handed bat and a guy who's capable of doing a lot of things. Can play a lot of places. He's performing and running really good, just like we know Nolan can do.

"He did everything we asked him to do and then some."

Reimold is recovered from a corrective procedure to fuse two vertebrae in his neck, the originally injury caused by a tumble into the stands at U.S. Cellular field while chasing a foul ball.

"It makes me proud that the organization did a lot ... I try to keep in mind why this all started. It started diving into the stands trying to catch a ball for our team in Chicago. That's where it all started," Showalter said.

"I'm real proud that the organization stood by him and did everything medical thing possible. Mr. (Peter) Angelos was very adamant about staying with him and giving him every opportunity. I'm proud for Nolan and I'm proud of the way the organization handled it.

"We all like Nolan and the story, but this isn't some charity. We think he can help us."

Showalter said Jonathan Schoop had "a bunch of at-bats again today" at extended spring training.

"He would have hit a couple home runs that the wind blew back in," Showalter said.

Brian Matusz was scheduled to throw three innings today in Sarasota. He can return to the bullpen on Sunday.

Kevin Gausman remains scheduled to start Thursday at Double-A Bowie.
