Showalter on Schoop, plus game update from Rogers Centre

TORONTO - Before today's game, Orioles manager Buck Showalter expressed confidence in second baseman Jonathan Schoop. After batting .105 through the season's first two games, the second baseman has gone 4-for-7 over the last two games with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.

Schoop-Hitting-Gray-Sidebar.jpg"Jon's got a little track record now," Showalter said. "He brings defensive things that contribute on a night he might not get two or three hits. We have a lot of confidence because we have some history with him. I think he's going to be a pretty consistent guy. A lot of people would love to have a second baseman that drove in over 80 runs last year and plays defense the way he does. We are constantly wanting these guys to be perfect every night and that is just not the case."

Tonight's game: The Orioles trail tonight's game 3-1 after four innings at Rogers Centre. The Orioles were retired 1-2-3 to start the game but scored once in the top of the second to get the lead. Chris Davis, who went 0-for-4 last night with four strikeouts, led off the inning with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on Schoop's groundout and scored on an Aaron Sanchez wild pitch for the game's first run.

But Toronto took the lead in the home second off O's lefty Wade Miley, after Miley struck out the side in the first on 18 pitches. Kendrys Morales singled and advanced to third on Troy Tulowitzki's double. With one out, Justin Smoak singled for a 1-1 tie. The next batter was Darwin Barney and his grounder to third was booted for a run by Manny Machado. Miley fanned the next two hitters to end the inning.

Smoak hit a solo homer on Miley's first pitch in the last of the fourth as Toronto's lead grew to 3-1. It was No. 1 on the year and traveled 412 feet for Smoak. He began the game 1-for-6 in his career versus Miley but has two RBIs tonight.

Rally time: After falling behind by two, the Orioles hit two homers and scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Schoop proved his manager's confidence right with a solo homer to left to make it 3-2. His second homer of the year traveled 419 feet. After Hyun Soo Kim doubled, J.J. Hardy hit a two-run shot to left for a 4-3 lead. His first of the year went 395 feet.

The Orioles went 1-for-13 in the first four innings versus Sanchez and then 4-for-7 in the top of the fifth to get the lead.

The lead grew to 5-3 in the sixth when Chris Davis blasted a solo shot to center.

Miley's night: Miley gave the Orioles a quality start tonight. He went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs, and is in line for the win. Over his last five regular season starts, his ERA is 2.12. After walking seven batters his first start, tonight he fanned eight without a walk.

Darren O'Day pitched a scoreless seventh, stranding two runners. He got Steve Pearce to pop out on a 3-2 pitch as Toronto left runners on first and second. Toronto is 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
