Showalter on today's roster moves and Jimenez starting Sunday

SEATTLE - The Orioles roster has a new look tonight for the opener of a four-game series at Safeco Field. Caleb Joseph and Vance Worley have been activated off the disabled list and Chaz Roe has been added from Triple-A Norfolk. Roe had to be added to the 40-man roster and the Orioles had one spot open to add him.

The O's are down to just one lefty - Zach Britton - in their bullpen, as T.J. McFarland goes to the DL with a left knee injury. He first got hurt in Norfolk and the knee is bothering him again. The O's optioned catcher Francisco Pena and pitcher Oliver Drake to Norfolk.

Roe is out of options, so now that he is here, he can't get back to Norfolk without clearing waivers.

Manager Buck Showalter provided an update on McFarland, who is 2-2 with a 5.63 ERA for the Orioles.

"This is something we have to get taken care of," Showalter said. "I know their doctor has to see him to approve it. So people don't play with the DL thing. Then he'll fly back to Baltimore to see Dr. (Michael) Jacobs. Hopefully, if he finds what we think he will, then he'll head on to Sarasota and start rehabbing. It's just been a challenge for him for a while now.

"He was over it we thought. Then he had a play backing up home plate. It is mostly when he (decelerates) on it. He didn't feel comfortable pushing off the rubber like he normally does."

Showalter was asked if McFarland could need surgery.

"Let Dr. Jacobs see it first," he said. "Structurally, it looks pretty good. But he's got an area here that seems to be bothering him and it's not getting better. Being on the West Coast, Dan (Duquette) and I were talking about what could be."

Roe joins the Orioles for the first time in 2016. With Norfolk, the right-hander was 1-2 with a 2.39 ERA. Over 37 2/3 innings, he walked 10 and fanned 45.

"He pitched real well for us for an extended period of time and I think he kind of ran out of gas last year," Showalter said. "Now he's kind of back to where he was. About two or three times, we came close to adding him. They all said he's by far - I shouldn't say by far - but he's the best they had. If he has opportunities to pitch in the big leagues somewhere else, I would rather us get that opportunity."

That was an apparent reference to an opt-out clause for Roe.

Showalter said right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez will get the start for the Orioles on Sunday after Chris Tillman pitches tonight, Kevin Gausman tomorrow and Tyler Wilson on Saturday.

"He's had a couple of good starts for us and we hope it's the start of good things," Showalter said of Jimenez.

Showalter said Joseph is under no restrictions as he returns to the roster and can be used in any way needed.

The Orioles today announced the signing of one additional selection from the 2016 First-Year Player Draft: right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers, taken in round six.

Earlier today, I wrote about the managing change in Aberdeen with Kevin Bradshaw taking over for Luis Pujols. An Orioles official said the club would not be making any comment on the reason for the change.

Reached this afternoon, Pujols told me Dan Duquette told him they were making a change and he didn't get a reason for his ouster. He did tell me to pass on that he thanked the Orioles for the opportunity they gave him to manage.
