Showalter speaks about Andino incident

To Orioles second baseman Robert Andino, last night's heated exchange with Yankees catcher Russell Martin over an accusation that he was stealing signs was simply "heat of the moment." "Boys being boys," he said. "Just had a few words. Nothing big." Manager Buck Showalter kept Andino in the lineup tonight. Asked for his take on last night's incident, Showalter said, "Exactly what happened. I think you all know. And we move on. We'll handle things as they come." We won't know until later whether there's a carryover into tonight's game. "I don't know. We'll deal with it if it happens," Showalter said. "I know what I think what right and wrong is and a sense of reality. It's not exactly like Mariano (Rivera) is featuring a curveball and a changeup and a split. Certainly didn't work out too well if that was the case. "I think there's a lot of that that goes on throughout baseball of, I don't want to call it paranoia, but I just think that it's something I know we're aware of when we're playing teams like the Yankees and a few other teams. Anytime you have a lot of veteran players and guys that played with each other for a while, it's something you look for from an advance scout standpoint and during the course of a game. I know Rick (Adair) and John Russell, catcher and pitcher responsibilities, are always watching those type of things. "One of the ways you combat that is you pitch real well and don't allow anybody to get to second base. That's another thing you can control. "There are ways to keep that from happening defensively. I found most of that stuff, 90 percent of it is just, with the way players change teams and move, there are no secrets in baseball. The worry about it has been going on for a long time. Whether or not it's being done is another question, but it is something you need to watch. "If I was a catcher, I'd want to make sure I was on top of it. It's one of those things that sometimes you don't want them to know that you know. You can actually use it as a weapon. We did it last year as a team defensively that actually helped us win a ballgame, because we knew that some of that was going on on the road." Martin is back in the Yankees' lineup tonight.
