Showalter speaks after 11-2 loss

Alfredo Simon allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings today, including three home runs that helped the Angels take an 11-2 victory over the Orioles before an announced 27,471 at Camden Yards. That's a touchdown, two-point conversion and field goal for the Angels. "I think today was, what, his 14th start?" Showalter said. "We keep looking for guys to step up and put themselves in a position where you feel like you can trust them. Some starts make you feel better about that than others. "I thought he had pretty good stuff today. They didn't miss the few mistakes that he made and it kind of snowballed on him. I thought stuff-wise, he was carrying very similar stuff to what he's had in his good outings." Brad Bergesen hit Angels catcher Jeff Mathis on the batting helmet in the sixth inning, but there were no ejections despite both benches being warned earlier in the game after Simon drilled Mark Trumbo. (Simon told reporters afterward that he was defending his teammates.) Plate umpire Laz Diaz decided that Bergesen didn't intentionally throw at Mathis. "I know (Craig) Tatum was sitting down and away, and you could tell by the body language and the reaction from Bergy - knowing Brad like we know him - but they don't know that," Showalter said. "I know how I would feel, with a couple things that have gone down, that you would certainly have some emotions about it. I understand that." Showalter said he met with Mark Reynolds about 45 minutes before today's game. Reynolds didn't play, but he might get into at least one game of tomorrow's doubleheader in Boston. "Got a little soreness there as far as a bruised area today," Showalter said. "He didn't really feel it last night. He wants to see how he feels tomorrow, running around a little bit. The doctor said it would be OK to play tomorrow if he felt like it. We'll see how batting practice goes. We're going to hit in the cages there, as challenging as that is in Boston, but it's more about running around the field. We're going to take him out and do some things. "I feel like if you don't see him in the doubleheader tomorrow, you'll for sure see him on Tuesday. That's where we're leaning unless he comes in and has some type of setback overnight." Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Matusz will oppose Boston's Kyle Weiland and John Lackey tomorrow at Fenway Park. Former Oriole Erik Bedard pitches for the Red Sox on Tuesday, with Rick VandenHurk starting for the Orioles. Tommy Hunter opposes Josh Beckett on Wednesday.
