Showalter speaks after 6-3 loss

The Orioles need to get their offense cranked up. They've scored three runs or fewer in six of their last eight games, and four or fewer in 12 of 13 games. The pitching has been outstanding, but that's too much pressure to put on the arms every single night. Miguel Gonzalez's streak of quality starts ended at four. Here's a sampling from manager Buck Showalter following a 6-3 loss to the Mariners before 36,508 at Camden Yards: On Gonzalez "OK. Really made one mistake. Obviously, he's pitched real well to (Robinson) Cano over his career and hung a split. He had made a lot of really good pitches to him, and he made him pay. But there were a lot of other things, obviously, that went on. (Kendrys) Morales tack-on runs. Had a shot at the end, though. Got the tying run up there. Just didn't do much against their guys. We know how good their bullpen is and tonight was another good indication." On decision to not walk Cano with first base open in fifth "Just trusting Miggy there. He's made a lot of good pitches and had a lot of success against him, and it just didn't work out. They have a lot of good hitters there. Miggy was carrying pretty good stuff and pitching well and felt comfortable he wouldn't make a mistake to him, but we did." On Cano "Well, I don't think he's picking on us. He's done it against a lot of people. There were a lot of other key outs. Big hit there in the ninth inning gave them a little cushion there and that hurt. We hit some balls hard in the first few innings right at them, which is frustrating. We've gotten him out some, too." On struggling offense "There's an ebb and flow to all parts of the season. It's not a flat line. Some people who are not doing well now will do so as the season goes on, and some who are might cool off some. We're obviously facing real good pitching and will continue to. It's that time of the year. As the season goes on, it gets a little harder to hit because guys are playing every day and pitchers are once every fifth or sixth day. Bullpen guys are getting rest between the times they're out there. It's pretty normal this time of year, unfortunately, that the season becomes more of a challenge, the length of it, for everyday players like we have." More on Cano decision "There's a lot that figures into it. I have a lot of confidence in Miggy that he won't give in to it there and we do have a base open. You have to give a lot of respect to the next hitter (Morales) as evidenced by the ninth. I understand there's a decision to be made there and we live in a result-oriented society. I've done some things I didn't feel good about and felt good about it afterward."
