Showalter: "We're trying to keep the field level"

Plate umpire Jeff Nelson declined comment after tonight's game, sending the message through crew chief Jeff Kellogg. Manager Buck Showalter had a few things to say, though he calmed down considerably after his ejection in the ninth inning. Probably a good idea. "It was just an accumulation of a lot of things," Showalter said. "It's unfortunate. Obviously, he was having a tough night and you're just looking for a sense of fairness, and emotions take over. That's one thing that can't happen. You can't get emotionally involved as an umpire. Ninety-nine times out of 100, I come in here and tell you we had a chance to make it not matter. It was really tough tonight. "It got kind of emotional there for him and just not a good situation there at all. We're trying, we're grinding, just like they are. We're trying to keep the field level." "I think this is something that was building. It's not a matter of frustration with the season. There are so many pitches during the course of a game that can go either way and we understand that completely. We just want our share. That's all. C.J.'s really having a great year and he has a chance to be as good as you want to see, and he can help himself. He's capable of doing what he did tonight, regardless of borderline pitches. And it's hard for me to say borderline with some of them." Asked if he bumped Kellogg, Showalter replied, "It's not something I'll go back and watch the tape of. I don't think so. I don't know." By the way, Jake Arrieta pitched a pretty good game, allowing one earned run (two total) in 6 2/3 innings. "I thought our guy was just as good tonight. Jake was just as good," Showalter said. "He gave us a really good chance to win. Seems like I've been saying it a lot that this past pretty good period of time that some of our young guys seem to be getting stronger and giving us a really good chance to win. I thought he pretty much matched (Wilson) pitch for pitch. He was pretty good. Jake held his stuff just about the whole ballgame."
