Solis goes five strong innings as Mesa wins 9-6 in Arizona

Mesa snapped its two-game skid with a 9-6 win over Surprise behind the pitching of Sammy Solis and big hits from Devon Tarvis and former Nationals prospect David Freitas in Arizona Fall League play. Solis went five innings and scattered six hits, allowing one run, one walk and striking out four. He is now 3-0 in three starts and has a 1.42 ERA. Solis tossed 73 pitches, 47 for strikes. He induced seven groundouts and two flyouts. Travis Shaw had a double, but every other hit Solis allowed was a single. Center fielder Brian Goodwin went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts, but he is still batting .290 in Fall play. Freitas, who was traded to the Oakland A's from the Nationals last season, crushed a three-run shot in the second inning. Addison Russell also hit a Solar Sox home run. Travis went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Mesa is now 8-2-1 and leads the East division by 3 1/2 games over Scottsdale. To have Solis continue to pitch with this type of consistency from game to game is another good sign. Solis is controlling his pitches and not allowing any big innings. Matt Purke is expected to start Thursday.
