Solis seeing doctor in L.A. to check sore elbow (updated with Rizzo confirmation)

Left-hander Sammy Solis has seen a doctor in Los Angeles to check discomfort in his throwing elbow, a club source confirmed. As first reported in the Washington Times, Solis has consulted with Dr. Lewis Yocum and team doctor Wiemi Douoguih the past few weeks after feeling soreness in his elbow during Arizona Fall League competition. Rizzo told the Times they are not considering Tommy John yet, but they always have to be take precautions when dealing with the elbow of a pitcher. During his first few outings this season in Arizona, despite giving up some hits and runs, Solis said he was feeling good on the mound. Solis went 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in seven games for the Scottsdale Scorpions, his second consecutive season in Arizona. He had 25 strikeouts with 16 walks. Baseball America considers Solis a high-end prospect in the Nationals system, ranking him here as No. 8 overall. Update: In his exclusive video interview with MASNsports.com following his daily session with reporters at the Winter Meetings in Dallas on Tuesday, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed that Solis is bound for a diagnostic appointment with Dr. Yocum to determine the cause and extent of the elbow soreness. "Sammy had some soreness in his elbow the last time he pitched in the Arizona Fall League - which I was at that game and he pitched outstandlingly, by the way - and was a little sore the next day," Rizzo explained. "(He) continued to be a little sore and we sent him to see Dr, Wiemi Douoguih, our team physician. He looked (Solis) over and we're currently going to send him out to see Dr. Lew Yocum and await his diagnosis to see where we stand."
