A few impressions and opinions on the happenings at Orioles camp in Sarasota.
*The injury news about Brian Roberts and Derrek Lee reminds us of the biggest issue facing this team this year. It's not how much Vladimir Guerrero has left, the progress of the young rotation or the development of Matt Wieters. It's the health of this team. They can't afford to lose many players and certain guys like Roberts and Lee are pretty critical to the hopes that this team is better and a good year is possible for this group.
*Despite the fact he had a good week at the plate (4-10 with two homers and five RBI this spring), I don't think the Orioles' brass sees Ryan Adams as the guy who would start at second base right now if Roberts can't go. The acquisitions this winter of Brendan Harris and Nick Green to join players like Cesar Izturis and Robert Andino gave the O's some options to play second if Roberts does miss some time.
It all leads me to think the club believes Adams needs more minor league seasoning. There is the matter of a high strikeout total last year at Bowie and his reputation for less-than-stellar defense. But there are those that believe Adams' bat may play at the major league level and maybe he is proving that this spring.
*I sense that even if Nolan Reimold outplays Felix Pie this spring, he could still lose out on the fourth outfielder competition. That would be because Reimold has an option left. I don't see any way the club could slide Pie through waivers and don't expect to see them try. If Reimold has to start with Norfolk, he is only a phone call away and could be back at some point early in the year.
*I have talked to some fans that are in favor of the club seeking to trade Luke Scott right now. They feel that Scott produced a career year last season and may not be able to duplicate it. They feel that coming off a solid year, his value is higher now than it could be during this season or after it. They have concerns about his defense and believe that if Scott were moved, both Pie and Reimold would make the opening day roster.
Radio plug: I will be hosting talk shows tonight from 8 p.m. to midnight and tomorrow from 9 p.m. to midnight on 1057, the Fan in Baltimore. Hope you get a chance to tune in on the radio or internet as we will feature plenty of O's talk during that time.
