Stephen Drew homers twice as Boston evens series

Stephen Drew had not hit very well against Orioles pitching this year, but he made up for some of that tonight. Drew homered twice and drove in five runs as Boston beat the Orioles 7-3 in front of a sellout of 44,765 at Camden Yards. It was Drew's second career two-homer game - his first came Aug. 25, 2010 at San Diego - and his five RBIs tied his career high. He began the night 2-for-20 on the season against the Orioles and batting .223 overall. He had gone 95 at-bats without a homer when he connected for a three-run shot in the fourth and he added a two-run homer in the sixth. Losing pitcher Scott Feldman, who had won his previous two starts, gave up six hits and four runs over five innings as he falls to 2-2 with an ERA of 5.12 in five O's starts. Orioles starters had recorded quality starts in eight of the last nine and 11 of the last 13 games. For the Orioles, Brian Roberts delivered an RBI single, Matt Wieters an RBI groundout and J.J. Hardy an RBI infield hit. And that was it for the offense as the O's fall to 58-47 with their fourth loss in five games. The Orioles are 4 1/2 games back of division-leading Tampa Bay, which beat New York this afternoon. Boston's Davis Ortiz got the crowd and himself fired up when he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Tim Timmons in the seventh. Moments later, he was thrown out of the game for his 10th career ejection after taking a bat and bashing the dugout phone to the point that his own teammates were taking cover during his tirade. But the Red Sox survived that and the Orioles tonight. Boston has won just one of the last 10 series between these teams, but they could take this series if they win Sunday afternoon's game at Oriole Park. If tonight's game doesn't make you want to comment here, check out this story from CBSsports.com's Jon Heyman. He reports the O's may be in the mix to acquire pitcher Jake Peavy and others.
