Steve Johnson moves to Triple-A, Mahoney to DL

It could turn out to be just for a start or two, but Baltimore native Steve Johnson today has moved from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk. Also today, Bowie has placed first baseman Joe Mahoney on the minor league seven-day DL, retroactive to April 12. Mahoney has missed the last few games with a quad injury. The O's were hoping he would avoid the DL. Mahoney is 1-for-7 in two games on the year. Johnson has made one start and pitched four scoreless innings for Bowie at Harrisburg last Saturday. It looks like he will make his Triple-A debut and start for Norfolk on Friday night. The 23-year-old right-hander went 7-8 with an ERA of 5.09 at Bowie last year, but pitched much better in the second half when he went 4-2 with an ERA of 3.60 in 11 starts. He is likely, at least temporarily, taking the roster spot of Troy Patton, who went on the seven-day disabled list. Since the start of this season both Chorye Spoone and Johnson, who began in Bowie's rotation, have been moved to Norfolk. To replace Johnson and Mahoney on the Baysox roster, pitcher Cole McCurry and infielder Miguel Abreu move to Bowie from Sinlge-A Frederick. OF Brian Conley and pitcher Chris Petrini have moved to Frederick from Single-A Delmarva while the Shorebirds have added pitchers Jason Gurka and Cameron Roth from Short Season Single-A Aberdeen's roster.
